Hamster wheel won't turn? I have a pic of it, any ideas.

Post by FSkerlak » Fri Mar 15, 2019 8:38 pm

So I see this kaytee hamster wheel on alot of peoples posts so I bought one and I put the mesh on it like I sometimes see. And I just saw one of my guys on top of it and I reviewed the tape and he walked on the wheel like it should be done and it didn't turn at all. I figure they are too light but I'm not sure if there is a tension release on the wheel or not because the back looks like your fingers are supposed to go there for some reason. Any one who has this model and knows the trick please let me know!! Thanks so much! Here's a post of what I got. If it works

How did you attach the mesh? We have 4 wheels just like that and they work fine. Post pics please

My crabs haven’t gone into their wheel yet, but the one time I placed my bigger one in there, he crawled almost upside down and the wheel didn’t turn. But I know that the wheel turns and it’s not that. I just think they haven’t tried hard enough to make it move.

Hey Xenocrab, I used zip ties to secure the mesh down. Here are 2 pics. Let me know what you thinkImageImage

That looks just like ours. Maybe the crabs don't have the weight to move it? Maybe it needs broken in. I'm sure once they discover it, it will spin! Crabbies are curious and always on the move! Don't worry!

Your shells are also not buried or covered in sand so it looks like a fresh setup LOL

Some of our crabbies only come out at night, so I always check for sand, ee, poop and food in the wheel as signs of them using it.

Some crabs take days, others weeks to find the wheels, but they will eventually use it.

One of them was on it within the hour and went upside down and then crawled on top of it!!

And yes, I just set it up so it's all fresh! Lol

It looks like it's sitting on the ground. Maybe it's the angle of the picture. Here's a pic of mine. I have it hanging "upside down" a couple of inches above the ground.Image

Did you test it to see if it spun? I have a rly small guy that uses mine, I have the same kind as you and is also sitting on the stand just like yours, it should work. Is there a shell underneath it or anything to why it wouldn’t spin? I’ve had my guys get a shell underneath the wheel and it made it hard to spin. Or like others said, maybe they just didn’t go far enough to make it spin.

If you can spin the wheel by hand they should be able to walk in it. Sometimes decorations and shells get under it. Make sure the wheel is pressed all the way into the axle in the center. We already had some sand build up in the center that made the wheel tougher to spin. With it being a new wheel that shouldn't be an issue though.

I don't know why the pic came up sideways.
