I have DIY screens. They're made with window screen kits and galvanized steel wire instead of the typical window screen stuff. Typical screen stuff works but I use lights for heat and didn't want screen to melt. I then took packing tape (sticky side out) and covered most of it leaving some room for air flow and bubbler tubes. By doing this, I got a custom size... I wanted two screens both equipped with hinges. (I'll have to post pics)

So you got two kits and used the wire instead? Sounds good...pics would help a lot!

Yes. I actually got four kits cause I wanted the hinge feature. Two kits would have worked without the hinges but I wanted to make it easier so that I wouldn't have to move lights every time I went in. These pics were just taken. Sorry it's dark. O and the blue tape is painters tape. I didn't want to seal the light side because worried heat from lights would melt the tape. I also taped down the outside (blue) so no crabs would escape. Remember this is a 90 gal so you may can get by with one kit depending on your measurements and wants.

What wire was replaced? I've never bought a window screen kit so I'm not sure what is included.

Looks neat Daws409! I use glass lids on my 100g & 75g. Love how the glass keeps the humidity & heat in. Luckily I have not broken mine. They have dropped down a few times scaring me, but they survived....as did I

You'll need screen spline, spline rolling tool, 4 corner connectors, and aluminum frame for basic screening.... This is all in a kit called "screen replacement kit". Screen is usually not included in this kit. Must purchase screen separately.

If you want hinges, you'll need 4 extra corner connectors and one 2 pack of hinges. I used gate house colonial flush hinges. I used #6 5/8 inch wood screws because screws that come with hinges were too long. (I also hot glued the inside where my screws went through the frame so the sharp points wouldn't cut them)

I used Blue Hawk rolled wire galvanized steel hardware cloth instead of typical screen wire. You'll know the difference. One is like screen on outside of windows (very flimsy) and usually comes in charcoal color. The other is wire like and stiff and is the color of tin foil or aluminum.

* All of this was found at Lowe's for under 30 bucks

Thanks! I would be scared to use glass in mine mainly because of my 2 legged children. There's always a ball or something flying through my house.

It is keeping my humidity and heat in, w/ a towel helping lol. I'm thinking about just getting another glass one. I like Daws409's kit tho and DIY is so satisfying when you get it figured out!

2 kits will definitely work... It's almost same floor print as 75 or 90 gal just 6 inches wider.

Let us know how it turns out [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]
