Untouched food? Hairs in water?

Post by Plasmoc » Wed Mar 13, 2019 3:18 pm

Last night I made a new food for the hermies - ground up pistachios, dried mango, dried cranberries, pb, and rice crisps mixed together with peanutbutter. Cucumber on the side.

I feed them a wide variety of foods and usually I can tell they eat because the food dish is a mess. It looked untouched this morning and still does tonight.

Is there something wrong with this food or should I give it another day? They usually love pb and mango alone.

Also, what’s this in the salt water dish? Looks like little hairs? Image

I should say this is the first time giving them pistachios.

Im failing to see the hairs, is it possible to circle them in the pic? If they moving, most likely they nematodes.

As for the food, they simply could all be buried and therefore, not able to eat?

I have had some devour their favorites several and the next time or two they don't touch it.
I usually try to limit their favorites to twice in one week them maybe once later the following week.
I didn't see the hairs either.

Yep they haven’t had any of these foods in 2 weeks so I thought it’d be a hit!

I’ll leave it for one more night and add a grape & worm castings to see if it piques interest.

I didn’t see any movement, they’re kinda white and super tiny and oval / line shape

Oh. I thought that was sand! Haha

Are they floating on the surface? It could be possible that they are springtails - they usually white, oval like in shape and float on the suface in mats similar to your pic.

Ooohhhhh they are moving!! I also see little things moving in the dirt super tiny, like 1/20th if a sesame seed or smaller!

So, now what? How do I get rid of them or are they ok? I’m ok with hugs in the tank s long as they won’t hurt the crabs AND won’t leave the tank lol.

They are springtails or thrips. Springtails are great to have as they eat all kinds of waste and actual mold spores. (I actually bought some last month as I didn't have enough for my new enclosures.) Thrips only dine on live plants so if they did end up in the tank they won't be around for long.

Springtails also enjoy high humidity, and tend not to do well out of the tank. So you should be fine.

Oh Jesus. Are there bigger bugs I can get to eat them? there’s something about little wormy bugs that kill me inside lol. Would rolly Pollys eat them?

They kind of jumped around in the water, but seem to crawl in the soil. They are fast!

I did just add more leaves to my tank couple days ago, but they were bought from a distributor and then I put them in the freezer for a couple weeks to kill off anything. Or so I thought.

I can’t think of anything else new I’ve put in there except the pistachios yesterday, but those were bought at the grocery store in a sealed package.

Would cleaning the tank help? I have two very young children, one still puts things toys her mouth. Is this something that could harm them? I have the kid fully covered in plastic now

You could get predatory mites. But otherwise, no. Nothing I can think of. Pill bugs can compete with the springtails, but its unlikely that the springtails will completely go. They naturally occur in our homes, so even if you do get rid of them they likely to come back.

They not likely to harm your children, so your child should be safe.

They do tend to just show up on their own no matter what you do with items or the tank. They are completely harmless to everything except decaying material!
