Coenobita Brevimanus- Indonesians
Housing
Same as other types of Hermit Crabs
In Tank Setup
They like to have a secure semi-enclosed space to relax in. So I believe that hidey huts and lots of foliage are a must for them to be happy.
Heat and Humidity
They are more active when my tank is in the 75-78? range. Humidity in the same range.
Substrate
I have both mostly playsand, with a Forest Bedding type area in my tank. I have not seen my Indos go to the Forest Bedding side.
Water
I keep both a large fresh and salt water dish, deep enough for them to take a dip in. I have noticed that they seem to enjoy a bath now and again, and are more outgoing with their tank mates when they are freshly bathed, and relaxing in the after bath playpen.
Diet
So far I have not noticed any dietary differences from the rest of my clan. They seem to eat less frequently, but I still keep a full food dish for them at all times, since you never know what they are doing while you sleep.
Molting
Both of my Indos went thru the quickest and easiest molts of all of my species. They came from tanks where the sand and substrate were kept, for the most part, quite dry. My substrate is most always on the moist side. Not dripping wet , but damp . I believe that this aided in their desire to molt, and their ease in molting. Both had missing limbs when they were adopted, and both quickly molted and regrew beautiful and whole.
From what I have observed of my Indos, they seem to really enjoy each others company. They are not quite as active as my E's but they come close. They are not as happy being handled as my E's and PP's are, but they have not been overly shy when I have handled them since they de-stressed. They tend to stick together, and seem perfectly happy to ignore the other crabs in my tank. Its not that they are unfriendly, quite the contrary,it just seems that they like to play with each other more. So I believe that they should have at least one ,if not more, of there own type in a crabitat.
