I bought a small ruggies probably 5-6 months ago and yesterday was the first time I've seen him up since I got him.

Admittedly that is a little bit extreme, but it's not uncommon for crabs to stay under for a couple weeks after you bring them home.

I don't like lights because they kill humidity pretty badly. I prefer using a UTH on the inside back of the wall 1/3 buried in the substrate.

So my vote would be for neither

Dont forget the frogs health aswell, they are one of the worst things to cohabbit with something. As they take in water etc through their skin they need a clean enviroment, need to be kept very clean if kept with other of their own species nevermind with other animals. Also with tree frogs being to...

One other thing to note, is that frogs often carry salmonella which will infect the tank which will make handling your crabs more difficult. Crabs, as far as we know, don't carry salmonella (or any diseases), but the germs will still infect everything in the tank.

It is never a good idea to mix species in any sort of tank. In the wild two species of animals are never forced to share the same small space together. It is too stressful on the animals to share such small quarters. Plus, with frogs you can never mix them with anything other then members of their o...

On second thought. Maybe I'm a bit too polarizing of a figure. I have like a 50/50 split of people who like me and people who would want to impeach me. Maybe if i can carry the vote in Florida and Ohio I could steal the election. My election strategy would be to offer every member 40 gallons and a m...

How does one become a rep or mod? Can I throw a metaphorical hat into the ring at some point in the future? Can I be the head of "Home-crabitat Security"? I can fight the global war on Terrorist Mites..... maybe fiddler crabs too (i hate them so  )

I agree. If there's no experts (like a Kathy, Crabber, or Tropo) then there's no knowledge, and if there's no knowledge then the forum would be futile at best. I would be more comfortable if it was owners that brought up this issue rather then people with a curiosity.

Coming from someone with experience, marine hermit crabs are really no different to an aquatic snail as far as care and maintenance go.

If it is a problem, I would guess it is also more serious with sand then it is cocohusk. Sand is pretty air tight and doesn't breath as much as EE.

Again I want to say no. I wish I could keep voting that way over and over just for the simple fact that hermit crabs are NEVER the center and main focus of salt water tank. They are cleaners and add ons. No one buys a salt water aquarium specifically to have aquatic hermit crabs. Marine hermit crabs...

Digging Ability Poll

One of the most popular topics I see on HCA is people worried about "collapsing the tunnel of their crab." I personally think we underestimate crabs digging abilities (and yes even when they are molting). I rearrange my tank every month and I have a lot of heavy wood and I know for a fact I probably...

Coming from experience, aquatic hermit crabs don't really have the same needs and concerns that are usually associated with land hermit crabs. Their role from a pet viewpoint is pretty much the same as a snail. They're basically just there for cleaning purposes. They just play the custodian role in ...

For an open wound like this, in the tarantula hobby, we use nail polish to close abdomen wounds and to stop the bleeding from torn off legs. Does anyone know if this would be a safe practice with crabs too? It doesn't harm the tarantulas or interfere with their molts.... does anyone have an input?
