Re: So I went into Walmart....

Glad to see well informed people spreading the true care requirements for fiddler crabs. Same applies to red claw crabs also often sold in pet stores.
I've had fiddlers and they've exceeded their expected average lifespan in my care. One lived to be older than 5.

Dead molters

I can tell you with certainty their tunnels collapse. The sand is sandcastle consistency however I think pool filter sand may be a bit heavier than regular sand, I'm not sure. I've never seen their tunnels hold primarily because of the movement of the other crabs. The couple times I HAD to check on ...

Dead molters

They're all PPs. 7 were purchased and 5 adopted. To be honest I'm so hands-off in their caring meaning I don't handle them, I just observe, that I couldn't tell you which are which. Put it this way. I purchased my first 4 on Dec 2008, then 3 in Feb 09 and adopted 5 in Jan 2011. That's a total of 12 ...

Dead molters

I've lost some crabs during molting and I'm not sure if it's because of something I'm doing. Quick stats on the tank 75 gallon with 6 crabs left Temp between 72-82 / humidity 75-80% About 5-6 inches of pool filter sand Coldest spot bottom of the tank is 70 degrees I've never smelled dead molters, mo...

How to add a second level shell shop?

I don't trust suction cups so the way I set up anything that's at height is using fishing line attached to the tank lid.

I was talking about the fish tanks ;)
But you do have a point (if this is what you meant), they definitely are munchers :D

Realistically, they don't really care what is in those tanks besides clean water.

Planted tank ferts can also be dangerous to hermits if not dosed right.
How are you going to keep the hermits from destroying the living things in the two tanks?

I am sorry to say but afraid what you originally had in mind will simply not work. IMHO this type of project would be best suited for someone that has had a planted tank and marine tank and has experience with both because it presents significant challenges. I have had both in the past and, honestly...

How much experience do you have with planted tanks?
Don't get me wrong, I am not a naysayer, nor do I want to sound discouraging, I just want to provide my experience so you don't set up anything for failure.

None of your links seem to work, they are trunkated. I wish you best of luck and am curious of the outcome, but I do believe you may be taking on too much, especially with just 5.5g pools. You'll have to really stay on top of the water parameters, especially on the saltwater side. I also think the h...

Just make sure whatever silicone you use, is pure and does not have any fungicides or other things. Play it safe and get the stuff labeled "aquarium silicone". Even Menards carries it.

Interesting debate. If I may add my 2 cents, I think us humans like to deal with absolutes, to put ourselves at ease thinking "I am doing the right thing". And when absolutes fail to hold themselves true, we don't always think critically. The fact is, there are rarely absolutes in nature as far as b...

Backgrounds

I need some suggestions picking out a good background for my 75 gallon crabitat. I'm talking about the picture-type you add on the outside, not a climbing background :) I am trying to go with a tropical theme and I got bored with what I have had so far, not to mention it shredded. Anyone have nice s...
