Re: Safe Food List from EH
How about forsythia flowers and/or leaves? They are in bloom right now and I was wondering, but don't want to take the chance until I know.

Re: Is an Iso tank necessary?
Definitely keep that extra plastic tank! You never know when a crab will get sick and you'll need to isolate it from the others. I have one that, I think, is about a two-gallon size, maybe a bit smaller. It's a plastic thing that's intended for small rodents, I guess (there's a circular place in the...

Found Jasper naked!!
He had been molting in a corner of the tank, under the substrate, and I guess Beatrix smelled him out. She had been digging in that area the day before and I just figured she had found a piece of food or something. Turns out that Jasper was there, and the next morning I found him naked! He was still...

Re: I saw one of my clypeatus hunting isopods last night!!!
I was just thinking of hunting around in the woods as soon as the weather is warm, so I can find some roly-polies (I grew up calling them pill bugs) for my crabitat. I live in Arizona, which is generally too dry for them, but you can find them in wetter places like in the woods, under rocks and logs...

Re: puzzled
Well, Jasper is definitely too big for the hamster tubes. I was thinking that one could the ends off some 2-liter soda bottles and tape the middle sections end-to-end to make large see-through climbing tunnels. But I can't think of how I would attach these to the tanks, themselves. Someone more inno...

Re: puzzled
So I guess it's a good thing that I change stuff around in the tank frequently. Both crabs become more active when I do that, investigating the new set-up and checking out every corner. I wish there was such a thing as hamster tubes for hermit crabs! It would be cool to have multiple tanks connected...

Re: Unexplained, Constant Chirping
Maybe he is sensitive to changes in air pressure, the way some people with arthritis notice an increase in pain with the change of weather.
I'm jealous of all of you with talkative crabs. I've heard mine chirp only two or three times, and then it was very faint and brief.

Poor Bug! I was really hoping she would make it, but I guess the damage was too great. You gave it your best shot, and took excellent care of her, and she seemed to know you were trying to help. ((((HUGS))))

Re: I think I just saw my crabs doin' the dirty! BABIES!!!
This is a very interesting topic! Enjoyed the videos of the crabs mating. How cool it is that you actually get to witness this behavior, and they have eggs afterward. Hope you can successfully raise the larvae to adulthood someday.

Are daffodils okay?
A friend gave me three daffodils from her garden. They dried out nicely, so I'm wondering if it's okay to give my crabs a bit of the flowers. I didn't see thme on either the safe or unsafe lists. Has anyone tried them?
