Re: How to keep the tank warm during a power outage
A few winters ago in New England we had a pretty bad ice storm. Our power was out for days and of course my first concern was my animals, in particular the hermit crabs! We have hot water/radiator heating running along the baseboards of some walls in every room, and I I have a 10 gallon tank that i ...

Re: It just... sits there
Lots of crabs don't make it through the first few days after you buy them, too much stress is lethal for them.
I'll be starting college at the end of August too, and I've been teaching my parents how to care for all my critters haha.

Re: It just... sits there
So do you still have the other crab you bought, or did he not survive? To find more crabs, the best thing would be to adopt, or find unwanted crabs that you could get. Lots of people will lose interest in their crabs after getting them as an impulse buy or just not have enough time to continue carin...

Re: It just... sits there
Does he have a friend or two? He could very well just be lonely, hermit crabs are very social animals and prefer the company of other crabs, contrary to what their name would lead you to believe. The humidity is a little bit low... I would try putting in a moss pit, that did wonders for my humidity ...

Re: Surprise surface molt! Kind of confused..
Have you isolated the him? Ive never needed to do it, but it's recommended to cut a 2 liter soda bottle in half and place the top half over the molter so the cover leaves an air hole, that way he can finish recovering from the molt in peace and not be attacked/bothered by other crabs who might steal...

Never posted here before!
Ok here goes:
Tonight --> walnuts, applesauce (Fifi's favorite!) and a piece of fresh coconut. Also some dried baby shrimp (actually meant for fish food haha, another crab favorite.) No matter how much shrimp I put in there its always gone by the next day - they love it!

Re: Sand went dry while possibly molting! What should i do?
Humidity seems fine, maybe try raising it by 5% or so and see if that helps keep the sand moist?
I bet he will be fine, especially if you keep the sand wet
Good luck!

Re: Sand went dry while possibly molting! What should i do?
Definitely dont dig up a crab thats burried unless its absolutely neccissary - whatever they're down there for, they usually just want to be left alone. :) You could take some water and wet the sand by evenly pouring it gently or spraying it over the top layer - it should trickle down and wet it eno...
