Ahhh, a successful molt feels satisfying.
One of my violas just came up from a successful molt recently, and DANG does it feel good to see him/her again! He/she (really need to figure out the gender) is big, super colorful, and looking great. I'll get a picture next time I see them out, but it must be nap time because everyon...

Re: Overstocked Shell Shop
I do try to have a sort of shell shop on the upper level, but things tend to get knocked down. Also, five shells per crabs when you have three PPs all in about that 1 1/4"-ish size that NOBODY has shells for... UGH. It's either 1" or the big jump all the way to 2", never just that little quarter inc...

Re: Reliable place to buy crabs?
Whether you buy or adopt, there will be deaths. Adopting, though, you are at least giving a home to an unwanted hermit crab, and helping someone who can no longer care for it, whether they cared for it properly in the first place or not. Otherwise, to be completely honest, you might as well take you...

They most certainly are little poop factories! And once you get your crabs, provided your piggie isn't on any medications and isn't sick, you can feed your crabs their poops, too :) The crabs like them. Hermit crabs eat poop in the wild. Maybe not guinea pig poop in particular, since they don't run ...

Aww, that is so sweet! So nice of them to think of the fish (and crabs!) and houseplants.
Also, your water is probably going to taste a little funny. But hey, clean water is good, right?

Re: deer poo!
Here is my problem with collecting poo from wild animals - you have *no* idea what kind of diseases or parasites that animal could have. Now, will these diseases or parasites hurt the crabs? Probably not, they eat this (literal) crap in the wild, and they are used to it... and yet you are bringing t...

Re: Problems with stable humidity with UV light
I bought the humidifier off of eBay for about $20 including shipping. The white teardrop top pops off so I took it to Walmart and found a flexible funnel in the autos section that fit snuggly into the top for about 50 cents (this is it http://www.farmandfleet.com/m/products/851233-wirthco-flex-o-sp...

Re: New Etsy Store - UrbanHermits! - Now with shells! 1/26
Hey everyone! I've just added a bunch of shells for sale on the store. Most of them are for very small crabs - 3/4" opening being the most popular, although I also have a bunch of larger magpie shells, and those are mostly 7/8", although I do have one that's a 1"-er. They're all pretty cheap, so ple...

Re: Australian hermit crab supplies websites?
Thanks for the tips :) Ah Australia... Beautiful country, but I'd never want to live there. For multiple reasons, crazy shipping rules being the least of them (I'm a northern creature at heart, and it's too freakin' hot down there). Really wish I could visit though :) Edit: Also! I've got shells up ...

Re: Saw this moss pit at Petsmart in Woodbury, MN
The Petsmart at The Quarry shopping center in Minneapolis does a great job with their crabs, too! I noticed the crabs had plenty of humidity and the temps were good, and the crabs were active. I gave kudos to the girl I saw working there, saying that this was a much better way to sell crabs because ...

Re: Problems with stable humidity with UV light
I also took the humidifier route. I don't have to run it often for my tank yet, but if you needed it frequently a timer would be helpful. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/23/c6ad304fae2a19e34d2b00fff0f84bd9.jpg Oh, that looks perfect! I've seen that humidifier at Target. Where did you get th...

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of nekkid hermits. I mean, watching them change shells is fine, although I feel like a bit of a voyeur. But seriously crabs, stay in your shells. I don't wanna see your squishy bitswodesorel wrote:All hermits are freaky looking back there!

Re: Beginner builds crabitat and would love some advice
Hermit crabs are scavengers, and they're also like toddlers - they'll put pretty much anything in their mouths. So, if they nibble it and discover it's edible (and many plants are, to a hermit crab), they will eat it. It's sad, because planted tanks are so beautiful. I had dreams of a planted tank o...

Re: What is a moss pit?
Moss is great for keeping up humidity, and mine always love nibbling on it! At least, the stuff I buy must be delicious. Can't remember which kind - not sphagnum, but the stuff I have right now I got from HCP and I'm too lazy to get up and look at the package (it's cold and I'm comfy in my blankets,...
