Success!
Just wanted to let everyone know that all three of my crabs have come up from their molt. Mr. Tadakichi, Sesshomaru, and Jadis are all well! I'm very excited for them and thrilled to see them again. Mr. Tadakichi has changed into Jadis' old shell. I expect this is a rare sighting of Mr. Tadakichi an...

Re: Another Molter Up, but...
Roughly 70% sand and 30% eco earth, all mixed together. The sand is play sand from Toys R' Us. I have been terrified to spray it very often because of the time I accidentally created too much ground water and a molting hermie drowned. It is sand castle consistency, though.

Re: Another Molter Up, but...
Okay, thank you for responding, crab master! I am keeping conditions in the tank at around 80% humidity, 80 degrees F, so hopefully they are all comfortable. These guys require so much reassurance from this community! Since I purchased the two new guys, I have only seen them all together in the moss...

Another Molter Up, but...
Last night Sesshomaru came up from under the sand and ate! I'm pretty sure he had been molting because I had seen no sign of him since March. Still no sign of my third crab, Mr. Tadakichi. Jadis is up and has stayed on the surface since he came up from the molt. Not Sesshomaru. When I got up this mo...

Re: Mass Molt?
Well, these posts make feel a little better about it now. I didn't document the day they all went down because they all went down and up again so routinely, I could never be sure they were going to stay down. I am almost 100% sure that March was the month they went down permanently, at least. They a...

Mass Molt?
I am still relatively new to the world of hermit crabs. I have not posted much on here since my crab Jareth died during a molt. I think I over-sprayed the sand and accidentally drowned him. :( Since then I have been feeling sad about hermit crabs' fragility... I got a couple of new crabs to keep my ...

Re: Bad News
Thanks, everyone. I feel awful. I have already removed him, and actually moved my other crab (Jadis) over to the 40 gallon I have had set up for a few weeks now. I will be getting some friends for Jadis, probably today. Luckily no one else is under the sand molting right now.

Bad News
Jareth did not survive his molt. I have some questions about it. I noticed when I found him that his cave was about 1/2 filled with water. His head was dunked into the water. Is that his shell water, or did his cave flood from me spraying too much? I read that I was supposed to spray the area he was...

Re: First Molt for Brand New Crab Owner
Haha, patience is something I have often struggled with Dragonsfly! Maybe hermies will help me learn. Not long after my original post, Jareth came back up from under the substrate again. (Maybe he is just de-stressing, not molting). He and Jadis have been enjoying the choya wood I added to their cra...

First Molt for Brand New Crab Owner
Hello: I am brand new to this forum and crab ownership (I had some hermit crabs as a child but they were kept in a fish bowl with gravel and no source of heat; obviously my family and I had no idea how to care for hermit crabs). So far I adore my hermies! I have had so much fun researching their pro...
