Re: Bird Activity Center
Oh, also, make sure you look at how big it is. I have almost that exact one for my bird except not dyed and from a different brand, and its too big to fit in my 55gal crabitat. Edited to add: I forgot to mention, some pieces are glued together and I don't know what kindof glue it is or if it is crab...

Re: Bird Activity Center
That wood is dyed, not painted. I have a bunch of things like that for my bird. I'm not sure how the dye would hold up to the humidity in a crabitat - all it takes for parrots to get dye on them from dyed wooden toys is to be wet, or get the wood wet, and touch it. The dye isn't considered harmful (...

Re: Is an ISO tank really required?
I highly recommend having an iso ready and waiting just in case. I didn't have an iso for the first year of crabbing and I had deaths because I had no way to separate a crab that had gone on a killing streak, or the crabs he injured/ended up killing. Whether you end up needing it or not, having an i...

Re: Group Molt
I hope the ultratherm helps! I went from a 29 to a 55, so I cant give advice from experience on heating a 40. Most people seem to have good luck with ultratherms though~

Re: 1 crab still down
Crabs can stay down for up to 6 months or more depending on their size. I had a small crab stay under for 4 months. You really want to avoid digging unless you absolutely have to (flooding, bacteria, fungus, etc etc) because if the crab is molting and you disturb the molt, the stress could kill the ...

Re: I can't handle it anymore!
The one thing that stuck out to me on your questionaire was the food. It sounds like you aren't offering a wide variety of proteins and that can lead to cannibalization (but Es are prone to being cannibalistic just because they can). I'm not saying this is your fault! They're wild animals and they o...

Mine almost always pull mass molts. It makes it that much more exciting when they show up again!
What size tank are you trying to heat, by the way? Certain sized tanks gave me SO much heating trouble!

Re: I'm Not Being Unreasonable, Right? - Adoption Requirment
There's nothing wrong with being responsible and wanting to make sure they go to a good home. If somebody cant be bothered to take a few minutes to fill out a questionnaire to adopt an animal, what does that say about their commitment to the animal?
Re: Long Molt
One of my small crabs took 4 months to molt. 6 weeks isn't that long, I wouldn't worry just yet :3

Re: How long should I wait before giving up?
I wouldn't write them off, necessarily. I had a small crab stay underground for 4 months before she came back up, and she was fine.
Its possible the move stressed them, or there was flooding of some sort. Its hard to say for sure.

Re: Merry Christmas to me...not.
I've heard that dying crabs often leave their shells on their own because they don't have the energy to lug it around anymore and its a last ditch effort for them. If it was a fight, the crab would probably be picked at and partially eaten, or its shell stolen. I'm so sorry for your loss

Re: LiveHermitCrabs.com
That was the Hermit Crab Patch. They were the only ones who followed the HCA policy of not shipping in winter weather. Ah, I gotcha! I read this entire thread a few months back and could swear people were only receiving crabs in summer/fall. Then again this is a huge thread and it probably all got ...

Re: Pool submerging question...
The only time I've ever seen mine actually in the dishes were the times I did deep cleans, upgraded to a new tank, or added newbies and I dunked them all in the pools so they would all smell similar to cut down a little on disputes, as per a recommendation from somebody here.

Re: My crab might be sick or wounded
A lid with enough holes poked into the top to make sure he has air flow. If you have a Kritter Keeper, those work wonderfully for isos that go inside of the main tank!kadynadair16 wrote:Should the tupperwAre have a lid on it?
