Re: Safe Food List from EH
Great, thanks for the feedback. I'll not offer ground poppy. Better to be safe than sorry. I'm just trying to find ways to entice them to eat. Since it seems they are motivated by scent/smell, like I've read, I'm trying to think of things with stronger smells, to mix in with their foods. Glad to kno...

Re: Safe Food List from EH
I use Canola Oil 99% of the time, rather than Evoo. I haven't seen canola listed on eithe the safe or unsafe list. Anyone know if it's okay for the crabs to have? Also, anyone know if Agave nectar/syrup, 100% organic, no preservatives, is safe for Hermit crabs? I use that 90% of the time, rather th...

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
I must say I never imagined they could be so finicky or that it would be such a challenge to feed the Hermit crabs!!!! I'm baffled.
They did at least 'taste' the baby food mix of apple/mango/kiwi.

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
Ok, sardines..I'll plug my nose and give it a whirl. I know they can't have salt. Are there unsalted sardines? I've never ever bought sardines lol. Tonight i got a meat snack for reptiles - 100% meat: chicken, beef, cod, calcium carbonate, which I rehydrated a few pieces (actually smelled tasty, but...

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
February 3rd, they were moved into their new tank. I put some of their substrate from first home, on top of the new substrate in the 10g. Now I never ever see them. They stay in the cork round, no signs of activity with water or food dishes. The only difference is that in the new take the substrate,...

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
I'm going to try cooking the meat until dry, and then grinding it with pestal mortar. Everything I try, they don't seem to like. Tonight I offered them some chicken bones, with some meat on it (spice free, etc), some barley, fresh pineapple, carrot, broccoli, black bean, ground peanut, ground dehydr...

Re: How to keep the tank warm during a power outage
I went to Walmart to get some more handwarmers, and survival blanket (those thin shiny ones there reflect heat back onto you), as part of the prep for Blizzard Nemo, and was pleased to find Body warmers, which are the same as hand warmers, but slightly larger and last 18 hrs rather than 10 hrs. I pl...

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
Yes I wanted to get just a couple of shrimp. Guy looked at me like I was crazy LOL. I explained why I only wanted a couple. Turns out I had to buy 7 for the deli machine to even measure the weight and spit out a price lol! But alas, the had no interest in the shrimp either. Running out of ideas.

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
They do get variety. The same main 2 days in a row, but always add something different to that the 2nd day. Then it's a new menu again. Cuttle bone is always in the enclosure. They have shown NO interest whatsoever in eggs or eggshells. No interest in freeze dried bloodworms or shrimps (served both ...

Re: What's on today's menu & recipe sharing
Just an FYI. Spinach (fresh), unless organic, is one of the top 5 foods to retain pesticides. So if giving fresh spinach, washing is not enough, as it's absorbed into the leaves. Organic or cooked is best. Frozen spinach that's been par-boiled, is considered safe, but I'd rather just go organic on t...

Re: How to keep the tank warm during a power outage
I'd think having some emergency hand warmer packs on hand would help as well. I plan to get some to have in my "emergency kit for hermits". It also has things like freeze dried foods, salt packet's for making their salt water. Emergency blanket. Combined with emergency blanket and another over that,...

Re: Lighting Guide - For Heating and Viewing Your Crabitat
I worry about heating because they are only in a very temp crabitat that's inadequate (my apt is only 69-70), and the only reason they have 80 average humidity and 80 average temp is because I had to get very creative, but it's not a long term solution: They are in a plastic reptile style container ...

Re: Lighting Guide - For Heating and Viewing Your Crabitat
Sorry, but I am confused. Under the lighting guide, it suggests the moonglo for 24 hr heating. So I thought this meant that it was safe to use for 24/7, which is what my Hermits will need, due to seasonal temps and the converted farm house I live in. "Nighttime Viewing + Heat (also for 24 hour heati...

Re: Lighting Guide - For Heating and Viewing Your Crabitat
I've been planning to get a 10 gallon tank for my hermit crabs. I was planning on a moonglow bulb for 24 hour light/heat, incandescent. I've been looking on line at various pet supply places local to me, like petco, for moon glow bulbs that would go in the aquarium hood. The aquarium I am looking at...
