On Pesticides & Such

I'm very careful not to feed my crabs anything that might have pesticides, fertilizers, or other kinds of chemicals like that. I generally avoid store-bought produce for this reason. Though I'm curious to know if there's a good answer behind how one can avoid such chemicals without avoiding the food...

Re: Welcome to Crabtown!

(I plan on keeping images to their own posts) Reginald hanging out in the open - a rare sight! Super hard to get good pictures, my phone camera gets blurry pointing at dark stuff. Like this crab, for example. https://67.media.tumblr.com/e3a487b437a685d350dd19d16df3f8e4/tumblr_o9v01cSwSi1v4k4p2o1_128...

Re: Welcome to Crabtown!

First of all, thank you all so much for the compliments! :D Having an appreciative audience is really nice, haha. anyone who says that hermit crabs don't have individual personalities has just never taken the time to really observe them. I agree completely! There are definitely pronounced stereotype...

Re: Welcome to Crabtown!

I'll start with introductions from recent pictures - I'll usually only post one or two at a time, but I've recently taken a lot of good ones! I had another post where I introduced each of my crabs, but these are much better pictures, and represent who's on the surface right now (for the most part). ...

Welcome to Crabtown!

I've been maintaining a tumblr blog with regularly queued pictures of my crabs for some time now, purely for the sake of forcing myself to keep up with some kind of ongoing project. So the blog's low follower count isn't so bad. On the other hand, having more of an audience will help me keep up with...

How to stop lid climbing?

The setup I have closes heat and humidity into the tank with an aquarium lid. Unfortunately, a few of my crabs are obsessive climbers and have a habit of getting themselves stuck on various parts of the lid's underside until they eventually lose their grip and fall. This used to be a somewhat rare o...

I haven't ever printed one of the size charts, but I'd guesstimate that Bill is a large at this point.

Thanks for the compliments, on behalf of the crabs :)

Who's got tumblr? Samples from my crab blog!

If I still frequented HCA like I once did, I'd probably just post my crab pics here all the time. But I've been maintaining a side blog on Tumblr for me to post them for a while now. So for those of you out there with Tumblr, here's an injection of crab pics for your dash: crustacean-station ! I'm n...

Re: Hanging Baskets in Tank

I've used the power-locking kind, but the petroleum jelly thing is new to me and I hadn't thought to prop them up with wood. I'll have to give that a try when I rearrange the tank next, thank you!

Hanging Baskets in Tank

I've long used suction cups to hold up baskets that I've used as shell shops and moss pits, but without fail they fall down after a couple of weeks, making tank maintenance rather grueling in my opinion. I feel like there must be a better solution, but I don't really want to use tape (which they'd p...

Re: I must be doing something right! :)

It took around six months for my crabs to start being out and about during the day, instead of hiding until dark. Add another six months for, most of them anyway, to stop running in terror if I approach the tank. I can't wait until my new ones are that used to me...

Re: LiveHermitCrabs.com

Just make sure your new crabs don't get a chance to burrow to molt if they have mites. That's how you get a never-ending cycle of molters preserving your parasitic mite population. If that happens it will take 2-3 more doses of predator mites and a lot of luck to get rid of the infestation.

Re: LiveHermitCrabs.com

Is there a chance the others will have or get mites since they were shipped together? I'm asking because I also ordered multiple species and while I could iso a few I could not put all of them in there because its only a 10g. Certainly, and this is why you will want to isolate mite-infested crabs. ...

Re: LiveHermitCrabs.com

I got two straws, two indos, and two violas. All small, all in decent shape. Half of them have moderate wounds of one kind or another; mostly broken leg segments, but one of the indos had the tip of one of its pincer-tips on its BP neatly cut off somehow. The violas have mites, but none of the other...
