Re: Just caught my crabs "in the act"
I am curious why I've had these crabs together for so long and yet they've only chosen to breed in the new, bigger tank. I want to know what I changed that made it suddenly a good habitat to breed in.

Re: Just caught my crabs "in the act"
I honestly have no clue if we've had rain lately because I haven't stepped out of my apartment in over two weeks due to COVID-19. I would do my best to raise any zoea but I'd have to do my best with the supplies I have on hand. My town is a hot spot for the virus and I have asthma so I really should...

Just caught my crabs "in the act"
I moved out of my parent's house in september and I now have a bigger tank. 160 gallons upgrade from the crabs' old 45 gallon. As the crabs come up from molting one at a time, my parents call me to come pick them up. So far only two crabs have surfaced. A male and a female. They've been in the new t...

Re: Recommendations from other groups?
I'm currently only a member of one other hermit crab group. Its on facebook and its okay 90% of the time, but you get banned for correcting the mods or recommending other groups so when information is wrong, I can't do anything which sucks. For example, they told someone they couldn't feed a trail m...

Re: Pacific Turbo
Most purple pinchers LOVE any turbo shell. Every crab is unique though.

They drink and bath from the same bowls so only two are needed. Salt water and fresh water.

Re: Humidity constant around 92. Safe?
92 humidity is perfectly fine for them. The main reason why people say up to 85%ish is because food molds extremely quickly at higher humidities. If you aren't struggling with mold, there is nothing wrong with a high humidity reading.

Re: Anyone have dwarf hamsters?
http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/ is like the equivlant of HCA but for hamsters! lots of good info there. The main trick for dwarf hamsters is their diet. they are prone to diabetes so avoid sugar when possible.

hurricane irene
I was just curious how y'all think the wild hermit crabs will react and attempt to survive through hurricane irene. also, Idk if they've had their annual migrations yet, but i think they would've. if the zoea have turned into crabs yet, could they be swept away in the hurricane and die, or populate ...

Re: strategy to battle mold
the salt i use for the saltwater is Instant Ocean.
I'm not sure how to calibrate my hydrometer since it is digital.
Again, I haven't misted the tank in about a month so I don't think flooding is an issue.

Re: strategy to battle mold
The substrate is half coconut fiber and half sand. I plan on switching to 1:5 ratio the next time i'm forced to clean it. It was mixed with dechlorinated salt water. I actually haven't been misting the tank for about a month. Its gotten to the perfect point where the evaporation from the water bowls...

strategy to battle mold
I give mostly fresh food to my crabs but recently i've been battling more and more with mold. Its white and long and fuzzy. If the food i offer is really moist, it can go moldy in only a few hours resulting in me replacing the food multiple times per day. I've considered stopping giving them fresh f...

Thank you all
I've had crabs for about six years now. I got my first as a gift from a friend. After a month in my (inadequate) care her leg fell off. I freaked out and ran to the internet for help. I found this website. It has taught me so much. Now I am the resident 'hermit crab expert' at a pet supplies plus lo...
