Re: Saltwater pool tips to encourage usage by crabs
I have a filter in my fw (sw has had 2 that keep getting destroyed by the salt) I don't notice much of a difference . Hi Great to hear you have a larger sw pool. I don't know if your aware (I didn't until I went through a couple of filters myself) but you can only use a marine type filter in a salt...

Re: Saltwater pool tips to encourage usage by crabs
I love the idea of a proper sized pool for my hermies, so this is something I will keep in mind for later when I get a bigger crabitat. Sorry if I missed it somewhere in your posts, but what about fresh water... do you have a pool for that as well, or just a small dish so they can drink? Hi Reptili...

Re: Saltwater pool tips to encourage usage by crabs
Hi all Its been almost a year since I posted my saltwater pool tips and I thought you might like an update. I am happy to report that my hermit crab family is still enjoying their saltwater pool. I have learnt a great deal about my hermit crab family from watching them around their pool area. Some c...

Re: Aqua One Protein Skimmer for large salt water pools
I didn't realize that skimmer came with filtration media. This basically eliminates the need for an additional filter? I have used the Tom mini nano filters in the past but they couldn't handle the junk the crabs dragged into their pools. Skimmer seems like the way to go! Hi rednerite The protein s...

Re: Aqua One Protein Skimmer for large salt water pools
Hi there, I am thinking about getting a protein skimmer for DIY built in pools on my next tank upgrade. Do you have photos? I could not seem to find this particular skimmer online; I am in the USA, where did you find yours? Everything I am finding for nano tanks is still large and unsightly to look...

Re: Aqua One Protein Skimmer for large salt water pools
Hi I'm located in Australia so I'm not sure what's available in the USA at the moment. I will post pictures of my skimmer and saltwater pool showing my setup in the next few days. Can you provide any info on what you are thinking of doing eg size of pool, how many litres/gallons depth, number of cra...

Re: Oak & Maple Leaves: Fresh, Dried, or Both?
That is a serious undertaking, Sweetp! :) I just go where I know there hasn't been pesticides or fertilizers used, and rake up giant lawn bags of fallen Maple and Oak leaves in late October/Nov. The bags get deep frozen for around 30 days to kill off any bugs that may be hiding out before I use the...

Re: Sleeping Underwater?
I use an airstone and they can get in and out easily. I need to get a different substrate in there. I put in smooth stones so I will look for the new stuff. I have a trip to 2 different pet stores today so I will look. I need to start testing the water. How often do I do that and what do I use to do...

Re: Sleeping Underwater?
I keep finding a few of my big guys in the pool at bedtime swimming then when I go to spy on them later they look dead. Just now I pulled one out because he had been in 4 hours and even his feelers were. He went into his shell and peeked out at me in such a way that I think he was angry. Is this no...

Re: Oak & Maple Leaves: Fresh, Dried, or Both?
I have 3 PPs. I just read they like to munch on maple and oak leaves. We have a TON of trees in our yard, and we don't use pesticides. But do the hermies like fresh leaves? Dried leaves? Or both? If dried, do I need to wait until fall when they drop off the trees? Thanks!! :-) Hi I collect leaves t...

Re: Saltwater pool tips to encourage usage by crabs
Ellysara , Sweetp has C. Variabilis (aussies) in her tat, unfortunately that what most of the crabbers in australia are allowed to legally acquire. However a few I know, have managed to buy some straws, however the cost - $$$ - and they rather large. However, Sweetp that was an interesting read. La...
