Re: Large hides?
You could use a terracotta pot or planter turned on its side. You'd still be able to see him, but a couple of my guys seem to feel comforted just by crawling in and facing the back, with their shells facing the opening. It's like wearing a shell on their shell! I used to have the coco hut upside do...

Re: Best Way to Mix Substrate - Your Opinions Please
When I mixed mine up, I soaked the EE really well and then mixed it with the sand. I didn't have to add a whole lot of water to it then. Gosh, was that hard work. By the time I'd finished layering and mixing it all (in the tank itself), my back was killing me! Lol

Re: Large hides?
Yes, the possibilities are endless, Gloaming! You'll find yourself in a store or thrift shop (the best place for finding great crabitat items), see an object and start thinking "How can I use this for my crabs?" Wow, never thought of a thrift shop--what a fantastic idea! Re: Large hides?
I have a pretty big cork round and half log in my 75g with my larger guys. There's a big piece of mopani in there that they like to hang out on and under. Also fake plants. In my other tank I have two large clay pots along with fake plants and wood. Shell shops and moss pits provide some cover too....

Re: Large hides?
For my big guys I have lots of plants for them to hide in, and also a larger ceramic planter cut in half. You can get a plastic storage container and cut a big enough hole in it, too. Won't be pretty but it works! He's been hiding in all the plants so far, which seemed fine, but after seeing him st...

Large hides?
Any ideas for a hide for a large crab? I got a large coco hut for my big guy, but he doesn't fit through the opening. He sure tries, which is so sad to watch!

Re: Crabitat WIP
Sounds good! I'm going to get a plexiglass lid made (once I figure out where will cut it, not sure if Home Depot will but I'll be asking when I pick up the play sand) in two pieces. One full piece for the half without the terrarium, and then like a frame piece that I'm going to attach to the terrar...

Vinegar question
I got our tank moved to the new place and set up again, all 40 gallons of it. It's like being a new crabber all over again! Lol I can't remember stupid things like...do I wait until the vinegar smell has dissipated before putting my little fellers back in? If so, about how long does that take? I fee...

Re: Keeping substrate wet
I'll bump up spraying for sure. Maybe that's all I need to do.

Re: Keeping substrate wet
I have a UTH on the outside back wall, but it's up higher, not below the substrate level. On one end I also have a reptile daytime light (can't remember wattage). The substrate is seven inches deep, play sand and EE.

Keeping substrate wet
Well, we moved the crabitat yesterday to our new apartment. Luckily no one was molting, because we dug up all the substrate and put it into buckets. When I was scooping, I noticed that a couple inches down, the substrate had hardened significantly. Underneath was DRY substrate. I spray and keep the ...

Re: Moving 40b to new home
I just moved 10 minutes away with my 40 gallon. All I did was take the glass lid off and moved the tank with two people! We were both able to lift the tank, so no need to dig the crabs up in my opinion. I also don't use sand, making the tank lighter See, that's kind of what I'd originally planned. ...

Re: Moving 40b to new home
Many crabbers will dig them up, with multiple prepared ISOs at the ready. Hopefully that is something you can do, and hopefully you won't come across too many molters. Crabs spend most of their time underground just hanging around. I just think it's more worth it to dig crabs up than to futz with a...

Re: Moving 40b to new home
I highly recommend you take the crabs out and move the tank empty-ish. Takes the guesswork out of how to protect the entire tank's structure against shock, whether the crabs are being stressed, etc. You can prepare a super nice temporary tote tat to transport the crabs, filled with snuggly moss, wa...
