Re: Let the 55g build begin!
Everything looks great! That stand is beautiful and I really like your climbing wall. I tried to do something similar in my tank with a fish net, but my implementation wasn't as professional as yours. Net ended up being a bad choice and I didn't have it taunt enough for proper climbing, but I think ...

Re: Evolution of a Crabitat
I had a few pieces of slate from a used tank purchase too. I don't know the size/shape of yours, but mine turned out to be really handy. I used them as a flat, stable, non-molding surface to go between the substrate and wood items, to prevent the wood from sitting on the moist substrate and potentia...

Re: Beach Sand??
The sand in my tank is about 50/50 play sand/beach sand and also has some shells and wood that came directly from the beach. My theory was that since it was all soaked through with salt water, it might help prevent mold. I haven't had much mold problems there or elsewhere in the tank though so I can...

Re: Does 'strobing' affect hermit crabs?
They drive me nuts too. For what its worth, I took some pictures of one of mine at night using the camera flash. The crab didn't seem to care at all, no reaction. Maybe comparable to lightning strikes in nature. In your case its a much smaller light, I doubt it would bother them unless its right dir...

Re: "Communication" with my crabs!
This is very interesting. For the most part, my crabs have shown little interest in me except as a threat, but after reading this I'll definitely give it another shot (if anyone ever comes back up!).
thermidor, I'd love to see a video of a trained crab, that would be awesome!

Re: crabs lethargic and hiding, or just growing?
Right on cue, the one crab that was coming out at night to eat has gone down again. I'm glad I'm not doing anything grievously wrong. That being the case, I think my plan will be to: 1. rearrange the 'tat, lowering the substrate on one side and filling the space with more climbing areas and a...

Somewhere around the size of a golf ball I'd say. I've never put them on a sizing chart but I'd guess mediums?

Wow, those tree trunks are awesome! What are they?
Once I move and find out if Trundle is still alive down there I'll definitely consider getting more if the space is okay. Assuming they all survive into jumbohood, how many is reasonable in a 55g? I don't want to crowd them.

Re: crabs lethargic and hiding, or just growing?
Thanks for the responses and reassurances. I was sticking with 3 crabs because if they all grow to be huge I'm not sure there's room for more - this is probably as big of a tank as I want to have. Rearranging the tank seems like a good idea. I've been wanting to do it, but was holding off because I'...

Re: crabs lethargic and hiding, or just growing?
1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Mix of beach sand, play sand, and EE. ~10 inches high, I don't remember exact mix, maybe 7:3 sand:EE? 2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humi...

crabs lethargic and hiding, or just growing?
I apologize ahead of time for the lengthy post, but I think some background information is necessary to understand the situation. For the last ~1.5 years, thanks almost entirely to this wonderful community, I have been providing my crabs with what I thought was good care. Now I am wondering if I'm a...

Re: How does sand get there?
If your tank is like mine, there is a little ledge around the inside of the top rim. One of my crabs will occasionally find her way up to the ledge and climb back and forth or do a loop around the tank. Also, usually when rays of sunshine hit it, the tank will get some condensation on the inside of ...

Re: OMG! Crab found in far part of house!
I accidentally left my tank lid cracked one time after changing water dishes. I noticed it about 45 minutes later. I looked all around the tank and saw no escapees, examined the opening and saw no evidence of sand or anything else, so I assumed all was well and never thought about it again. Almost 2...

I ordered some shells from them and posted some pics of actual sizes along with listed size. Might give you an idea what to expect. (warning lots of large pics)
