Re: Are my crabs even alive?

Sigh. I went gently digging. I found a shell suspiciously deep near the last place I heard/saw Shellina and completely filled with sand. I found both of the newer crabs (from Reptile City) underground. But what I DIDN'T find was any trace of Shellina. None. Anywhere. In finding the two below-ground ...

Re: Are my crabs even alive?

And... even if she's not... then how am I supposed to care? Let alone my 10 year old daughter? If disappearing for a year is norm... how can anyone even consider these "pets?"

Are my crabs even alive?

I've posted a lot about my PPs. I now have 4 of them. Not that anyone can tell. I posted an emergency post about Shellina back in January, who we've owned for a lot of years now. She molted and came out early around New Years and I panicked because she came out of her shell. We put food and water cl...

Re: Where do my PPs go?

Hello! Have you ever filled out the emergency template? http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=46102 Usually something is wrong for them to ditch their shell. We are beyond that, thanks! Yes, emergency post, etc, etc. She was just too weak to carry shell between water and food....

Where do my PPs go?

Hi! So I've posted several times about my PPs, and I'm just curious. In the 3 years of owning them, I've never been completely sure when the two of them were actually molting, until very recently, when our large PP Shellina came up early from a molt and was so weak she had to leave her shell. After ...

Re: My experience with Reptile City for PPs

SG, they charged $30 for overnight and then sent USPS 2-Day (Priority) which probably cost all of $6. Yeah, that's making a profit off shipping and is pretty common with online shopping. Priority shipping for a flat rate box large enough to send the crabs is at least $19 (Based on the USPS website....

Re: My experience with Reptile City for PPs

Reptile City is a company in Texas. Did you complain to the company? What city does the box say it was shipped from? I complained to them about the shipping and his only response was, "They won't arrive DOA." Great, but they aren't out of the woods. I also showed him my review here, which now gets ...

Re: My experience with Reptile City for PPs

After reading this person's horror story, I can see now why most people don't recommend ordering crabs online. The OP's crabs were supposed to be shipped overnight, yet they ended up being re routed to Maryland and left in a warehouse in freezing temperatures that were not good for the crabs' healt...

Re: My experience with Reptile City for PPs

Thanks for info. I won't use them again. I think they make all their money through shipping rates and only care that they aren't DOA. Fingers crossed for them and hopefully this post will dissuade people from trying this vendor.

My experience with Reptile City for PPs

There's been some discussion about online ordering of crabs, so I decided to try Reptile City. They claimed to have 2 xl/jumbo PPs for $10 (on sale) plus $30 overnight shipping. They also claimed that due to winter shipping the "overnight" package would be held for pickup at the mailing facility so ...

Re: Any bulb recommendations for nighttime viewing?

Hello :) Here is what I use on the ceiling of my crab room: https://smile.amazon.com/Exo-Terra-Night-Light-1-watt/dp/B00PZ7TC8E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1521655256&sr=8-3&keywords=exo+terra+moonlight Yep, I saw this, thanks! But even this looks pretty bright. I'm going to try the LED one and see what...

Re: Any bulb recommendations for nighttime viewing?

Thanks all. I decided to try this LED one. Going with the small because my 29 gallon is not 2 ft tall and I only want the bare minimum of light just to see a bit what they are up to before we go to bed. https://www.amazon.com/Exo-Terra-PT2335-Night-Fixture/dp/B00JDRPM4A It doesn't generate heat and ...

Any bulb recommendations for nighttime viewing?

I wanted to get a moonlight bulb so we can occasionally see the crabs at night WITHOUT adding a ton of heat (our temps are just fine). Has anyone used/or do you recommend the Exo Terra incandescents (the elongated kind, not the round bulb)? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CDIHDAG/ref=s9_dcacsd_...

Is a heavy coco to sand ratio okay?

Hi there! I've read somewhere that most people use more sand than coco in their substrate. I just boosted my substrate so that it's probably 2/3 coco and 1/3 sand. This partly happened by accident; I was looking to raise the height level of the substrate and had more coco than sand so just went for ...
