Re: Am I insane? [DIY Cage Build]
Im team do it! In fact, would love to build my own crabitat (sigh, I got the exo terra like 2 years ago) once I found a rather reliable and cheap source of pvc! They seem to be rather easy to work with compared to conventional plywood builds. It always seems to never be enough haha ill definitely b...

Re: Am I insane? [DIY Cage Build]
The only thing that would concern me is the weight involved, pushing on the seams. Crab tanks are just like building a DIY fishtank in terms of how the pressure is distributed. Reptile tanks never have to worry about that kind of thing, unless it's a specialy paludarium for like water dragons. You ...

Am I insane? [DIY Cage Build]
So, I've been building some PVC cages for my reptiles. And I had the idea - why don't I build one for the hermit crabs? PVC is water safe, resistant to rot, very strong but light, can be sealed with aquarium silicone, and can be drilled into to hang decorations. It also holds heat and humidity extre...

Re: New Fake Plants at Michael's - safe/durable?
I use them and have had no problem, my crabs have never wrecked anything though so I don’t really know. That’s where I have gotten most of my fake plants and fountains and I find they work really well:) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I've bought from them in the past, but the leaves were thicke...

New Fake Plants at Michael's - safe/durable?
I bought some fake, what I assumed to be plastic plants on the Michael's craft store website and they feel like their made of fabric? I imagine it suppose to make them seem more real, but will my crabs be able to rip them up and eat them? Has anyone bought plants from Michael's recently and used the...

Re: Unusual Smell after baking substrate, potentially harmful?
My sand/eco earth mix smelled horrible while baking, I let it air out and cool and it was fine. Still used it and it's been over a year and no issues.

Re: Substrate dries out
Do you use a heat lamp? They can dry out the top later of substrate. I’ve found the UTH. attached to the side of the tank (and controlled with them or stats, very important for safety) do better at not drying everything out.

Are remote thermo/hygrometers safe?
I bought an 8 channel weather station to use in all my tanks (reptiles and hermits) so that I had a one stop shop for checking temps and humidity. The sensor uses radio waves to send info back to the station. Is this safe for crabitat use? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200810/237a1ece7194be50f9...

Re: Ask questions about food not included on lists here!
This is kind of a weird one but mealworm sheds? I breed mealworms for my reptiles, and they shed their exoskeletons a lot as they grow. I throw them away constantly but I wondered if that would be a good calcium/chitin source for the hermits? The mealworms are fed wheat bran (substrate), vegetable s...

Cleaning substrate?
I had a ton of sand mixed with eco earth that I had to remove from my tank for a few months while I moved. It been in buckets out on our screen porch covered up. I’m ready to set my tank back up fully and I want to reuse the substrate (probably 170 lbs worth) but I’m worried about the cleanliness. H...

Re: Not moving out of the moss
If your humidity and everything looks good, they might just really like it. My crabs spend a lot of time in the moss pit, especially if it’s fresh. They eat it too, which will make them unwilling to get out for food! (Why move when I have a whole buffet right here?) eventually they’ll leave. Sent fr...

Does anyone have experience with this brand of coco fiber?
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180523/7602c03f98822906d2d1de502b60a164.jpg It’s Prococo compresses coco peat block. It says it’s organic. Should it be safe to use? I’m wary of straying from pet store brands, but it was such a good deal that I couldn’t refuse. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using T...
