Re: Golden Sunset Sand from PetSmart
It's plain old quartz sand and will be safe for the crabs. That said, buying a 50lb bag of playsand from HomeDepot/Lowe's for $5 will be a much better deal than $13 for a 10lb bag of the NatGeo Golden Sunset Sand.

Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
I was thinking the coated wire kind like this one, my crabs could easily get traction on the outside. Side note, I don't know if my crabs are heavy enough to spin it! [emoji1] The coated wire doesn't spin as freely as the plastic wheels. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170304/33d43c5ccf8159a38b2...

Re: Raising tank temperature
I'm also in Arizona (Phoenix area) and have been able to keep the 29g nice and cozy in the winter using an Ultratherm UTH. For those chillier nights, I drape a small throw blanket around the back, sides and rear top for an additional temperature boost.

Re: What are your crabs up to?
I was cutting up cucumber for my Syrian hamster last night and decided to give a piece to the crabs. Charles Paris, my little guy, was the only one above ground and he immediately snatched the cucumber and was trying to drag it to the back of the tank. The piece was as large as he is so he ended up ...

Ditto re checking craigslist. Look for listings for "terrariums" as most of those tanks will come with a mesh lid.

Re: UTH and other questions
Hi! I am in the process of setting up a larger tank for my crabbies and I am looking into a UTH. It's a 29 gallon tank, and we keep our house thermostat at 68-70 range. I am looking at an ultratherm 11x23" mat to put along the back side of the tank. Does anyone have experience with this, and if so ...

I, too, do the "surfboard" thing and when that piece gets worn down into a thin spike, I flake it with a fingernail to add into their dry base mix.

Re: Just went to PetSmart
Just an idea for the cork round- on the end that will be on the sub cut an arch door so the crabs can use it as a hideout! I put moss in mine and they love it! I have mine sitting on end with cloth flowers poked into the substrate from the top, no doorway cut out. The crabs climb up the side of the...

Re: Just went to PetSmart
Omg your crabs will LOVE the cocohut with the ladder, that's the cocohut I've had in there since August when I got them. They go nuts over the thing! I did have to cut off the ladder eventually because the rope and wool started to decay from the moisture, so keep that in kind lol. Other than that o...
