Re: New used tank...

Just got the tank, larger than I thought and will be hard to sneak into place and it currently in my studio, hidden... :? It was used as a Tropical Fish Aquarium. I also received 3 very nice pieces of driftwood and assume these would be safe to use with the hermit crabs after a bit of cleaning. I re...

New used tank...

I'm about to get a 46 Gallon Bow Front tank used, 36 x 16 x 21. Any suggestions on what to clean it with etc or what not to clean it with? I was going to get a med or large size UTH, any thoughts on this. I also use just a bit of lights for heating as well. My current 20 long, I use a small UTH with...

Re: Grabber

I have one of those shells my hermit crabs won't touch it. How did you get your hermit crab to use that shell? They've always used these type of shells even though I have other types in the tank. After 2 moults they just go for these same type shells. I found they will change shells then go under t...

Re: New Owner

Haven't posted for a while but can say both Hermies went under to molt, a few days apart and after just 3 weeks both are back, again a few days apart. This molt was a very short period compared to the 1st molt. First time around, 2+ months, this time around 2+ weeks. Also, I added a sand/coconut fib...

Re: New Owner

There's a thread floating around here somewhere about metal. Can't find it and it's been months since I've looked into it but I think (hopefully my memory will serve me right) metal is ok. It does rust eventually which isn't pretty but I think the consensus is that it doesn't really bother the crab...

Re: New Owner

Thanks for the replies! I've been reading a lot about a crabitat setup, all say hermit crabs should not be exposed to metal. Does this mean, metal that can potentially rust, or just having any metal, whether coated or not or even stainless (which does not rust)? I've looked into getting a couple of ...

Thanks! :)

How do you prepare Sphagnum Moss for Habitat, I read you wet it, but is it supposed to be soaked for awhile etc.

Thanks, Rick

Re: New Owner

Thanks for the replies! I went out and picked up some Sphagnum Moss and wanted to pick up a bag of sand but they didn't have quickrete instead had sackrete play sand (which I assume is the same thing). There are so many things written about sand as a substrate, play sand is good, play sand is bad, s...

New Owner

I adopted 4 Hermit Crabs from a neighbor, 3 small/med and 1 micro all in a 1 gallon hex type tank with maybe an inch of sand, I felt sorry for them and unfortunately one of the small/med was DOA. I setup a nice 10 gallon tank using a few inches of coconut substrate and the remaining 3 almost instant...
