Re: Using a desktop fountain...pros/cons?

On the substrate: It's about 5" on the deep end (definitely need to fluff a bit!) and about 3" on the low end. I think it's the angle, because even I looked at it and though 'huh, is my substrate really that shallow?' Maybe it's that dark line that goes through the middle? I've always gone with 'twi...

Re: Woohoo! Scored a new 30g and stand for $10!

I actually LOVE the idea of using a screen and then sheets of plexiglass. I have a screen now, and I've been using damp towels. Don't know why I didn't think of different pieces of plexiglass. Definitely a Facepalm moment!!

What types of lamps do you use? Definitely looking to upgrade.

Re: Using a desktop fountain...pros/cons?

Well, the fountain finally gave out. I think maybe a little bit of moisture got into the outlet, but I'm not sure. I enjoyed the heck out of that thing. Worked a treat for elevating the humidity, You could hear the water without a ridiculous hum, and it gave a nice little light show when it was on (...

Woohoo! Scored a new 30g and stand for $10!

 What kind of hoods have you guys found to be the best? I've cracked two different aquariums with excessive heat, and I'd love to have ONE that doesn't freaking crack. I had purchased some items that I was trying to figure out how to work into my 20g long, and I'm excited to ha e a little ex...

Re: DIY Pools

I had been looking for the mini paint trim trays, but all Walmart/dollar tree/Home Depot had been carrying for MONTHS were these deep bowl things with a long handle for hanging on a ladder. FINALLY I found the shallower/tilted entry (like paint roller trays, just mini), and I HATE them. WAY too shal...

Re: Snail shells for hermit crabs?

Funny enough, I bought a couple 'Apple snail' shells, super cheap (like .99) because they were jumbo version of my more expensive turbo shells, just a bit thinner. My PPs originally favored the thinner shells before they outgrew them and were forced to change into the thicker shells. I'm thinking ma...

Re: Where to buy new shells ASAP?

We visited the grandparents in Florida and visited the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs...and OMG - I went NUTS buying new shells! Beautiful green turbos for under $3!! I spent more on shells for my crabs than any other souvenir! :cloud9: Not that helpful for your current situation. Maybe check Amazon...

Using a desktop fountain...pros/cons?

So, in a fit of annoyance over heat and humidity (and a few glasses of wine...HAH!), I took a desktop fountain (previously used batteries, but I noticed it used the same little 3 volt corded adapters that I seem to have way too many of), rinsed it thoroughly, placed it on the higher level of my fres...

Finally saw a shell change! Is this a normal thorax?

I was trying to get video when I realized he was swapping shells, but my hubby sent me a text message that threw off the timing. But after a year and a half, I *finally* saw a shell change!! And it creeped me the heck out. His thorax was a creamy pale white...all the videos I've seen they've been pi...

Re: Runaway crab. :(

You guys are so sweet to worry about my little dude. Hes naturally a shy one, and has been digging all over the tank for the last day or two. I just added in some new sand/EE, but I think I'm going to build up one side a little more and see if he truly needs a molt.

Re: Runaway crab. :(

Woohoo! After obsessing about it all day, I have located Sig! In the dadgum tank. Doing a little spot cleaning and poop scooping, and the sifter hit something. So I brushed the top of the sand away with my finger, and caught sight of the very tip of his shell. He molted not too long ago (the b...

Runaway crab. :(

Well, it finally happened. I think I might have a crab on the run. :-( I visited the sponge docks in Florida, and bought a ridiculous amount of shells (because they were such a great price)! Get them all boiled and cleaned up, both barnacles and Sig chose two new shells. They were battling it out pr...

Re: Underground Shell Fight While Molting?

As for the 'why', in order to encourage them to eat their exoskeleton, they emit delicious crab odors during the molt...sometimes resulting in cannibalism. :-( I was pretty sure my crabs had dug down in order to eat each other, but they ended up fine...have you heard any noises? Like scratching on t...
