Re: Ultratherm Question - is it okay to go too long?
Heat from any source will always cause evaporation, which is how the air in the tank remains humid. It becomes even more of a challenge to keep that moist air in the tank winter when the furnace is running and the air outside the tank is bone dry. You can seal the tank up as tight as you can (not r...

Re: Ultratherm Question - is it okay to go too long?
Will the ultratherm still dry out the tank if it's kept above the substrate? That's what I've been having the biggest problem with is my tank getting dried out as I'm currently using a heat lamp. I mixed and wet my substrate and within 12 hours all 7" was bone dry, right to the bottom. The crabs can...

Re: Ultratherm Question - is it okay to go too long?
Ditto on what hermieluv1 wrote. They're not sticky and come in a stiff, transparent piece. Ultratherms are precious! [emoji176] 23" on a 30" is just fine. Stick it on and insulate the whole thing. You wont go wrong! Crabbers unite!!! Now when it comes to insulating.. I heard you put tinfoil onto th...

Ultratherm Question - is it okay to go too long?
I'm wondering if it's okay to get an ultratherm that's a little bit too long for my tank, and just wrap the excess around the sides. The tank is 30.25" long, and the ultratherm options are either 23" which I think will be too short, or 35" which is too long. It will only overhang by a couple of inch...

Re: Rescued crabbies from outside, never owned one before!
OMG I would have CRIED! Not to mention the mess - my cats knocked a 10 gallon down the stairs once and I was finding shards of glass for weeks, mostly with my feet. You have a wonderful outlook on things! :) Check out Petco - they should be running their $1 a gallon sale soon. That should help a bi...

Re: Heat/Humidity Dilemma?
Have you calibrated your hygrometer to make sure it's reading correctly? Swings that severe can happen, especially in winter with a furnace running in the house, but that is some extreme humidity changes and it could be a sign of a broken humidity gauge. (Also, most new guages don't read correctly ...

Heat/Humidity Dilemma?
So I currently have my 6 small crabs in a 10G, but moving them into a 40GB ASAP. I was having a really hard time with humidity, it was going down to 20% even with spraying 5x a day. I purchased a humidifier for the tank, and installed it last night after doing a full clean out, and adding more subst...

Re: Rescued crabbies from outside, never owned one before!
SO GUESS WHAT I DID LAST NIGHT!? My Ultratherm came in, so I went to bring my 40G upstairs to set it up, and I DROPPED IT DOWN THE STAIRS. I got the the very top and slipped backwards, bye bye tank :( Needless to say, the 40G is now $100 WASTED as it is smashed and unusable. I cried, like a huge bab...

Makes perfect sense!YYWW wrote:The airstone bubbles away inside the jar, which causes water vapors to make humid air, which gets forced out of the humidifier into the tank.

Re: Bundy's DIY Humidifier :D
Okay, so I have one of these.
I put the airstone IN the jar? or in the tank?
I'm so confused...........
I thought I connect 1 tube from the pump to the humidifier, and then the other tube from the humidifier into the tank?
Where does the air stone come into play?

Re: Rescued crabbies from outside, never owned one before!
I bought a humidifier second hand. It's a black plastic jar with a blue spongy thing inside, and 2 tubes sticking out of the lid... I have NO idea how this thing is supposed to work! I have an air pump and aquarium tubing. It is almost identical to this one http://www.amazon.ca/Imagine-Gold-SIM90026...

Seeting up a 40GB?
So I recently purchased a 40 gallon breeder tank for my 6 hermit crabs. I am waiting for my ultratherm to come in before I put them in it, Does anybody have any photos of 40G setups that they might be able to share? I am a total noob when it comes to crabs, and I want to make sure that my tank is se...

Re: Rescued crabbies from outside, never owned one before!
Hi and welcome to this great forum!! :cheer: I would just like to add that humidity is really difficult to maintain and is a problem for a lot of us! A little trick that I used to do is mist the wood branches, silk plants, coco fiber wall and anything else that might retain water a little longer th...
