Thermostat & Timer

Hello!

Every weekend I go to my beach apartment and have no one to care for my Hermit Crabs. Is there a thermostat that will turn the heat lamps on and off as the temperature fluctuates and a timer that will turn my UVA/UVB lights on and off? Please let me know.

Regards,
Richard

Re: Leaving on Vacation

Maybe two on timers, so one is on the other is off and then reverse? That way, you're doubling the amount of water available and ensuring that the mist/fog is throughout the tank and not on "one side" if your tank is dry... I'd suggest getting them now - or something similar, ultrasonic humidifiers...

Re: Leaving on Vacation

I can talk about the food and water. Water will be fine for the duration of your holiday, as long as it large/deep enough that it won't dry up. Dry foods are the best to give; things like oak leaves, cereals, dried shrimp, dried fruit, coconut shavings, seeds, nuts ect... will be fine. Just offer a...

Leaving on Vacation

Hello! I will be leaving for 11 days on vacation and have no one to care for my hermit crabs. What machines work to maintain humidity, like an automatic mister? I have an automatic timer for the heat bulbs and UVB bulbs so thats not a concern to me. How should I go about them having enough food and ...

Re: Automatic Mister

I can offer brands -australia - but have you looking into "gardening" quality ones or even what some of the herp/reptile people use in their tanks? I've looking into the ZooMed fogger but don't know it that will work to increase humidity. I've looked into the MistKing but the nozzles need to be scr...

Automatic Mister

Hello, I am looking for an automatic mister for my crabitat. I used to have one from ExoTerra but purchased one after the other and both broke. I prefer to have a system that has two separate hoses/nozzles since it will be used for a 200G (yes, two-hundred). The terrarium is outside so it's always a...

Re: Improvements to my crabitat?

Holy cow!!! Thats a huge tank!!! How deep is the substrate? (Hard to tell from the pictures since the tank is so big) it should be at least 3x the size of your largest crab, with 6" as a minimum. As long as the fresh and saltwater bowls are deep enough for your crabs to completely submerge ...

Isopods?

I've had HermitCrabs for around 4-5 years now and never got into isopods. What are they and how do they benefit hermitcrabs? I have a 200G (yes, two-hundred) tank. What are the pros and cons of isopods to hermit crabs. I also have my tank outside, would that affect isopods?

Improvements to my crabitat?

Hello! I have a 200G (6' long) aquarium with a screened/mesh top. I use 2 45W nocturnal heat lamps and 2 UVB lights. I have 2 food bowls, 1 salt water bowl, and 1 fresh water bowl. There are 7 large hermit crabs in this tank, 5 strawberrys and 2 PPs. I give them a mix of foods from the Hermit Crab P...

Re: New Crabber: How to prepare tank!!?

I would recommend putting everything on/in the tank and before you leave to buy the hermit crabs, put the food and water and regulate the temp and humidity. :D Let us know how it goes!

Re: Ultratherm UTH insulating questions

Woah I need to get me some of that. Have any of you guys experienced higher crab activity levels when the Temps in your tank stay higher?? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk Yes, any lower than 80 degrees makes your crabs sluggish. Mid 80s is where most notice the highest amounts of activ...

Re: Heating Issues

Hello all,

Just a little update. I went ahead and ordered 2 75W Infrared Heat Bulbs and 2 5.0 UVB lights and a digital thermometer and hygrometer to get better readings. Thank you all for your excellent support!

Many Thanks,
Richard

Re: Heating Issues

People have good luck with Acurite digital thermometer/hygrometer combo that costs about $10 from Walmart or Amazon. Whatever you get, the hygrometer will need calibrated to make sure you're getting an accurate reading. Check our reptilebasics.com for Ultratherm sizes/prices. If you get one that co...

Re: Heating Issues

If you want to get good heat, most pet store UTHs don't work. The recommended brand is Ultratherm, which can only be bought online, but they're relatively inexpensive and do a great job. They can also be safely insulated to boost temps more. You would want the biggest size that fits on the back of ...
