"Communication" with my crabs!
Hi all! COOL update. So James Crabswell and Dr. Samuel Crabson have been a lot more active and comfortable lately (still a bit skittish sometimes, but a lot less reactive and stressed). I recently watched this video and thought I'd try it on the Doc on one of his more adventurous evenings out. He wa...

Crabswell is back!!
Hi all! James Crabswell and Dr. Crabson have both been molting for over a month (Crabswell went first, then Crabson joined him after being lonely and crabby for a bit). This is their first molt with me, so I'm ecstatic that it went well (especially since we had a crabsitter oversee their molting con...

Re: Alaska HermitCrab + Naples Shells
Our crabs should totally have a dinner party together, CrabbySquirrel! :hlol: I totally forgot to mention the powdered mineral supplement! It went untouched FOREVER, but then suddenly the little bottle cap it was in went missing. Turns out Dr. Crabson stole it for himself. It's been in his favourite...

Re: Drying Strawberry Leaves
Thanks for the response, Rebecca! I'd be using an oven. How long would you suggest I leave them in for? Are there any done-signs I should be looking for as I lightly bake them?

Drying Strawberry Leaves
Hi all! Went through a big batch of strawberries for Valentine's day and now have a ton of strawberry leaves (which I know crabbies love). Can anyone suggest a good method for drying or preserving the leaves for future crabsnacks? Thanks!

Re: Alaska HermitCrab + Naples Shells
Of course you have a bunch of divacrabs. Mine have been great eaters, EXCEPT, last night I finally gave them cooked shrimp and they didn't even touch it. Crabswell stayed buried all night, and he's the big eater, so I'm just going to tell myself that Dr. Crabson got in there but didn't make much of ...

Re: Alaska HermitCrab + Naples Shells
Can't wait to offer some of these goodies to the guys tonight! Hey Crabinski! Was thinking of putting in an order through Alaska Hermit soon - what were the results with your batch? Any favourites? I have been obsessed with my food supply from Hermit Crab Patch, but I wanted to sub in some flowers,...

Re: Water dish mystery!
Substrate acts as a wick, especially sand. So if the substrate is up to the edge of the water then it will suck all the water out and into the tank. It can become a major flood risk if it keeps happening. This makes a lot of sense. The water loss has all but subsided since I moved the dish higher o...

Re: Water dish mystery!
Tres weird, indeed!! :?: Both bowls are equidistant from the heat source (they are at either end of the front of the tank and the UTH is on the back wall in the middle). I just recently unburied the FW bowl, resting it flat on top of the substrate, and that seemed to help a lot. I just can't figure ...

Water dish mystery!
Hi all. A bit of a mystery surrounding the freshwater dish in my crabitat. I've gone through two now and keep having the same issue. No matter how often I fill up my fresh water, it always empties within a very short time (30 minutes to an hour) - this is even during the day, when my crabs aren't ev...

Do you have any pics of the second levels, I'm trying to design one now and could use some ideas. Hope your crabs are enjoying and exploring their new space!

Re: How do I prepare for leaving on a trip?
I'm also about to leave on a trip for exactly 48 hours. I'm going to assemble some dried foods and I have my light/heat on a timer - what I'm most concerned about is the humidity. I don't have any special tools to control it right now (I have a plexiglass cover, moss, and a spray bottle (spritzed on...
