Re: underground "cave"
It's happened before, but I've never found an empty shell by the stump. They're always in other parts of the tank.

Re: underground "cave"
I've used an underground "stump cave" for years and the crabs love it. It's one of those resin mangrove aquarium ornaments with lots of twisty roots. I put it flat on the glass bottom and bury it in sub all the way up to the top so you can barely see that it is there. The top of the stump is hollow,...

Acrylic Crabitat
Now I'm researching ideas on making a giant crabitat.
Has anyone had success with an acrylic crab tank, or do they scratch it to pieces? I'm imagining sand + scratchy legs making a mess of acrylic, but I would prefer it to glass.

Re: Thinking about an extension, but need help.
Personally I think adding a topper will not solve your overcrowding issue. Will it provide more climbing space and allow you to deepen the substrate? Sure. But that footprint of the tank remains the same and molting crabs typically dig down as far as they can go to molt - the extra depth helps prev...

Re: Thinking about an extension, but need help.
The aquarium is 36 3/8"x18 3/8"x25." According to this http://www.aquariumdimensions.com/ it is 65 gallons. According to this http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php it is 71.7. Either way doesn't make much difference to me because I don't think 5 gallons or so will be the difference between me...

Thinking about an extension, but need help.
This is going to be my second attempt at writing a post, since my first one was deleted when I clicked "submit." :( I have a 65-70 gallon (different calculators give me different size results) that is currently housing 7 medium and 6 small PPs. I also have two 10 gallon ISOs up, one with 3 smalls an...

Re: Upgrading Tank 10-75 gallon
I have a 70 gallon and use a DIY humidifier to keep the humidity up. There's a tutorial on this site to show you how to make one. It's easy and cheap, and it's the only thing that has worked for me. Even misting twice a day didn't keep the humidity high enough.

Re: Adoption Advice
I'm glad I got them, too! Now I just need to make sure I have enough room for all of them in the big tank. I am plotting extensions right now. Those weird sponge mountains were hollow, and there were lots of little caves in the sides. There were several crabs inside the hollow part and a bunch of te...

Re: Adoption Advice
Well, I did it. I offered him half of what he was asking and he agreed. I drove up this afternoon and picked them up. The crabitat was just as bad as it looked, and it stank as well. My car smells like moldy water now. It took me more than two hours to take them out, clean it, set it up properly, an...

Re: Adoption Advice
I can't really afford it either, especially once you figure in gas for a two hour road trip and the heaters I am going to have to buy for the new ISO. But if I ate nothing but peanut butter sandwiches and potatoes for the next few weeks it might be possible. I guess I'm going to email him and see if...

Adoption Advice
This is probably not the right category to be posting this question in, but it seemed like the closest fit. I need some advice about adopting some new crabs. I put this link in the adoption forum in case someone else nearby was interested, but now I am thinking of taking these crabs myself. http://c...

Safe Woods for Crabitat
I'm making climbers for my tank and I would like to use some box elder bark that I found. Box elder is not specifically listed on the safe list on this site (http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=92557), but it is a type of maple and maple is listed as safe. However, it is ...
