Re: 3x5x4 Custom Plywood Tank
AWESOME! I see a few things sprouted in the second picture, what is that? Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk Chia and probably some millet. I toss in chia seeds, and sometimes a stalk of spray millet for them to ravage now and then, and any seeds they don't eat will sprout. Eventually the crabs t...

Re: Has anyone used an Inkbird thermostat?
I see it has been a couple weeks, but for what it's worth, I am currently using two of the same Inkbird thermostats in my new tank. One malfunctioned an hour after setup (the keypad stopped functioning), but the replacement works correctly. I have used several Inkbird PID thermostats in my old tank....

Re: 3x5x4 Custom Plywood Tank
How is The tank holding up at this time any noticable problems since the last update. I also think I Saw a straw, how many crabbies you keeping i that wonderful ecosystem? Yeah, couple of goofs on the doors, actually. I should have realized since there was a lot of end-grain material I needed to go...

3x5x4 Custom Plywood Tank
So, I went slightly off my rocker at some point since I got a few crabs a couple years ago. I built a custom 3'x5'x4' tank out of 3/4" birch plywood, 1/2" double pane glass, and a couple gallons of Pond Shield. Substrate is 12" to 16". Couple of finished shots here, and then the full build log is he...

False bottom tips on large tank build?
So, long story short, at some point I apparently lost my mind and I've been building a 5'x3'x4' (WxDxH) hermit crab tank out of 3/4" birch ply, which I will seal with Pond Armor. The heating controls, humidity, glass windows, doors, etc, I already have worked out. One last potential issue I am seein...

Re: Heater Size?
As far as estimating UTH requirements, experience with my 10g and 60g tank leads me to say if you have a proper amount of substrate (6"), you wrap foil or insulation over the back of the side of the tank you put the heatmat on, and use a mostly-sealed lid (plywood, glass, covered with plastic wrap, ...

Re: CrabTank 2.0 - upgrade from 10g
It's looking really cool! The only thing I can worry about is all that bare wire exposed in one pic! Yeah, I just kind of chucked it in there to begin with to figure out the best spots to measure humidity from (the temp probes and wires have their own shielding, the hygrometer is the one exposed). ...

CrabTank 2.0 - upgrade from 10g
I think the last time I was here my crabs were still hanging out in the bathroom in a 10g while I got my 30g relocated and took care of the issue of the faulty thermostat / hygrometer which ran my mist pump all night and flooded everything. New tank inside: http://imgur.com/a/S8al2 It's a 30g with a...

Re: Mixes or single ingredients?
Mine mostly get single foods, oysters, pork lumps, sprouts, veggie chunks, etc, unless it's peanut butter. Then I'll mix in some oats, bit of honey, ground-up freeze-dried mealworms / shrimp / crickets, seaweed, banana, powdered cuttlebone, anything small enough I have around. When I've had them lon...

Re: 20g Long tat
I am also using a 20g long, at the moment. I am running about 5-6" on the "deep" end but only about 4" at the other where I tried to leave a little room for climbing things. It's less than I'd like, but you're right, there isn't much room for more. I figure I am only getting away with it because my ...

Re: What are your crabs up to?
Well, I think they're finally getting the idea to molt. Two I know for sure were in tunnels and didn't emerge in the daytime, and the third wasn't in the usual lava rock retreat so he might have buried somewhere I can't see. Fourth one is hanging out by himself above ground. Hard to believe I've onl...

Re: Crabitat - Build in Progress
ahh, cool. I thought one looked a bit different. You know, I've noticed a lack of lava rock in local aquarium shops compared to when we set up a freshwater tank years ago. Used to be pretty much everywhere. Some people thought it was dangerous to fish because it was "sharp" (I guess if they got jamm...

Re: Crabitat - Build in Progress
Looking pretty good. My only comment is that your mileage on the ceramic huts might vary (they looked a little reflective in the pics, so I'm assuming they're not natural). My crabs had very little interest in them given a choice between hut and lava rock. I think they prefer being up off the ground...

Re: Terrarium liners below substrate
I had a bad experience with an automated misting system. The controller went haywire and pumped two gallons in overnight. Now I am running a false bottom with a sump access, and I have devised a rationing system for the automatic top-off for my misting reservoir. There is a float valve in the smalle...

Terrarium liners below substrate
I've noticed my crabs have a tendency to dig into corners or next to the sides of the tank. I usually cover the spot with some duct tape on the off chance they're looking for a molting spot. As I'm currently rebuilding my 30g with a false bottom anyway, would there be any disadvantage to running ter...
