Re: Crabitat Round 2!
Do you have any craft stores near you? Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Joann Fabrics all carry bags of shells in their home decoration stuff. We have a Hobby Lobby and I have checked there. Didn't have any good looking (as in appropriate size or shape) shells, unfortunately. I went ahead and ordered so...

Re: Crabitat Round 2!
Pet stores usually don't have a great selection that hermit crabs will actually wear :( Did the pack from walmart not have any turbos (green shells)? I thought I saw some in the packs I've seen. Do you have a dollar store near you? I got handful of turbos (great for purple pinchers) and whale's eye...

Re: Crabitat Round 2!
Thank you. We have 2 pet store in our area and neither had anything appropriate for shells. I got the best I could out of a walmart craft bag for now in hopes they would be better than the painted shells they are in. I read through the suggest shell type list but honestly it's all Greek to me at thi...

Crabitat Round 2!
I'm attaching some pics of the new set up so I can get some feedback and suggestions. Ok. So, 10 gal tank w approx 5:1 playsand to EE. UTH on one end. Right now it is sitting at 85% humidity and 75 degrees (hoping I can bump that a bit) The pic was taken as I was still putting things in so the readi...

Substrate Mixing Question
I am getting ready to dump my substrate and start fresh. I am brand new to this. I know the generally recommended ratio is 5 pts sand to 1 pt EE. If I am mixing the play sand with salt water to I get it to sandcastle consistency before adding the EE? Then do I layer the EE on top or mix it into the ...

Re: Any good videos for a new crab owner
I haven't yet. But, will. I just was wondering/hoping there were a couple of good go-to videos people knew about so I wouldn't inadvertently direct her to bad advice.

Any good videos for a new crab owner
My 8 year old daughter got 2 hermit crabs for her bday this weekend from a friend. I have been doing research, getting them set up with a good home, and asking questions here. I, of course, can share info with her. But, I think she would feel more ownership with it all if she got the info herself. S...

Re: New owners: crabitat questions
Right now the habitat is sitting at 77 degrees with 86% relative humidity. I would like it a bit warmer, but going to see what it levels out at by tomorrow before I make any major changes. The hygrometer hasn't been calibrated so that reading may not be accurate. But, I wanted to make sure I wasn't ...

Re: New owners: crabitat questions
Ok. Thanks again! I won't be able to get more EE until tomorrow. So, the soonest the substrate could be changed out will be mid afternoon tomorrow. Will it still be safer to dig them up (assuming they don't come up on their own) at that point? Then when I do change it, since I don't have another tem...

Any other thoughts? Is it too crowded with "stuff" We can't really go to a bigger tank ...

Re: New owners: crabitat questions
Thank you! I had bought some play sand today. I am assuming I should wait until both guys are topside to mess with changing out the substrate, correct? I forgot to add that I had bought instant Ocean today. I will check out a different declorinator, though. I was thinking the zoo med one was on the ...

New owners: crabitat questions
Hello all. We are brand new to hermit crabs and I have gathered a lot of great info from this forum already, but now I have some questions. A little background first. Saturday my 8 year old daughter received 2 hermit crabs from a friend for her birthday. These, not surprisingly, came sporting painte...
