Crabitat lid
Hello! I am getting crabs for Christmas. I have everything I need but I just realized my tank lid is mesh and that won't work for keeping in heat/humidity. My last tank had the plexiglass lid, which are very pricey. Is there a DIY that I can do to make the mesh lid work? I saw someone suggested plas...

Re: Dead crab smell
I don't think it could be food. Lately I've been really diligent about taking perishable food out every morning. The only thing I may not have caught was a piece of chicken but I put a same piece in before and by morning it's really dry so even if it was buried I think it wouldn't smell... it'd be m...

Dead crab smell
Never thought this would happen to me but I started smelling that "fishy" smell yesterday and it's stronger today. So I'm assuming one of my crabs has passed. What do I do now? I have one crab up and another had been down a few weeks (had 3 altogether)...do I try to dig and find the dead crab and ri...

Re: Out of shell and down a hole!
Thanks for the response! I think he's OK! His shell is gone from the top of the hole and the hole is roughly filled in with sand. So I assume he is back in the shell and is back down the hole!
Will keep you posted if anything else happens!

Out of shell and down a hole!
I came home tonight to see my littlest Hermie up. He's been down for about a month. I was so excited I wanted to check him out but when I lifted him up, I guess he freaked out and dropped out of his shell (only about an inch above the sand, so no worries he's injured from the fall). I was so shocked...

Re: Richard's shell & airplants
I ordered 11 shells from them and they took about two weeks to arrive. They sent me an email when they had been shipped. Very well packed, all the shells were in bags wrapped in newspapers and the shells are beautiful! They are a little too big for my hermies right now (I guess I didn't measure prop...

Shell shops in Orlando
My parents go to Orlando every Christmas...does anyone know of any shops that sell hermit crab shells in the area so I can tell them to pick me up some?

Re: Hermit Crabs Buried A Long Time...
I thought someone had said females tend to dig a lot more than males as well? Mine sure do! My tat' looks like I have tiny gophers in it with all the holes!

Substrate moistness over time
So my tank has been set up for about three months and everything is good, humidity and temp are great and always have been. Yesterday I noticed that one of my crabs was digging near the surface and the sand he was digging up was kind of dry and crumbly :( I have been spraying the sand a bit...should...

Re: Missing My Crabs
I also know what you are going through. I've had my four crabs since the end of August and we hardly ever see them. I have trouble sleeping at night, so I get up a couple times to wander the house...it sucks...but sometimes (maybe once a week!) I actually get a peek at one of my little guys before t...

Re: New at this.
I have a plastic basket as a moss pit that sits on a broken teapot that they hide in. Or you could try putting plexiglass on two or three hides underneath to support it.

I love it! So much inspiration for my next upgrade! Do you get the shelving from Walmart? I have looked around in our Walmarts here in Canada but I haven't been able to find them!

Re: So it's been a while...
I gotta get me some cholla wood and hemp nets! I also looked at some similar baskets at the dollar store...long thin ones, but I thought they might be too thin for my crabs. Definitely not; I always buy things that are way too big for my tank. Maybe I'll pick up a couple now!

Its pretty funny to watch. ...

Re: I've got mites :(
I actually need to fix my substrate. Unfortunately I filled only half my 20 gallon with the right depth of substrate. The other half is only about 3 inches deep. The good thing is that I'm pretty sure my three crabs are down on the deep side. I worry that they will continue to tag-team molt....then ...
