Thanks for the response! I think he's OK! His shell is gone from the top of the hole and the hole is roughly filled in with sand. So I assume he is back in the shell and is back down the hole!

Mine dig a tonne too. Sometimes if i get up in the middle of the night i catch them out and about....my one little guy will freeze when he sees me and then veeery sloooowly start towards his hole and at the last second speed up and jump down the hole like he's Bugs Bunny.
