Re: The Mysterious Missing Molter
I've cleaned out all the substrate, and my suspicions were right. Poor Mishelle didn't make it. RIP. Thanks everyone for all your help.

Re: The Mysterious Missing Molter
There has been mysterious amounts of liquid in the tank lately. And the rotten eggs/fishy smell is pretty much what it smelled like. Guess she did move on to the crabitat in the aky. RIP Mishelle

Regarding smells...
I was washing the water dish that sits near/over where Mishelle is buried and the sand on the bottom smelled kinda stinky and fishy. Is that the death smell?

The Mysterious Missing Molter
Hello crabbers! I have two hermit crabs, Mishelle and Junior. They are the class pets for my kindergarten class. Only, there's one problem: they aren't in my classroom. Right before our winter break (that's mid-December), Mishelle went underground to molt. Due to the fact that the school would be cl...

Re: Vacation Plans
I have finally mastered getting their temperature and humidity steady (yay!). Good to know that they'll be okay over Thanksgiving. I will plan on removing some of the substrate (maybe all, not sure) and carrying it separately from the tank in baggies or tupperware or something when I move them for C...

Vacation Plans
Hey all! So my 2 hermit crabs are pets in a kindergarten classroom. The holidays are coming up, and this leaves me with a conundrum: what do I do with the little fellas? Obviously they cannot stay alone in the locked up school for 2 weeks. But is it better for me to transport their 10 gallon tank (i...

Crafty Hermie Time!
Hello all!
I am in the market for things for my PPs to climb on and I had a thought. I knit/crochet and I can easily make them a climbing net! My question is, what types of yarn are safe. I have some cotton yarn. Is that ok? If so, how should it be washed before putting it in the tank?
Thanks!

Best use of vertical space?
Hey all! I have about 6-8 inches of vertical space above the substrate in my 10 gallon tank. I was wondering if there were any suggestions of the best use of this space? I feel like my poor crabbies have nowhere to go between the two water dishes and the food dish and the mopani wood and the moss pi...

My crab disappeared!! Is she molting?
So I am a hermit crab newbie who, two days ago, finally got her substrate the right depth. Yay me!! That evening but of my crabs (Mishelle and Junior) were active and playing. But the next morning there was no sign of Mishelle! They have a piece of mopani wood that got knocked over revealing her fav...

Heater Size?
Hello! I am a newbie crab owner and my crabs are pets in my kindergarten classroom. I have a 10 gallon tank and the temperature seems to be hovering at about 70-72 degrees! Obviously, my Zoo Med 10 gallon heater on the side of my tank is not cutting it. So I need to know what size heater to get now....

Not at all insensitive. In fact, I really appreciate the tips. One question: how would you suggest I insulate the heater??

Re: Surface Molt? Death? Not sure
Update. Brought them home today to keep them away from the stress of the classroom. Junior fell out of his shell when moved and stunk. Pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
RIP Junior

Re: Surface Molt? Death? Not sure
1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? A combo of sand and coconut fiber. Probably 4 inches deep. 2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? Yes. Mounted at t...
