Re: Chia seeds?
The humans here go through a lot of chia. It's cheapest for us at Sam's (or Costco) and a local grocery chain called Food Lion, where it's found in the natural foods aisle with the organic baking supplies. Sometimes we find it at Marshall's or TJ Maxx, too, which is always kind of funny. We buy the ...

Re: Coconut Flour
I use unsulphured coconut flour. Dunno if the sulphur would be a problem or not, but it's what I happen to have since I do a lot of GF baking for myself. I often mix it with honey and spirulina or kelp powder. I also put some coconut flour in the "vacation" mix, which is a mix of dehydrated veggies ...

Re: Oak tree diseases?
If you're in the US, you can bag some leaves and take them to your local agricultural extension office. It might take a few days, so write your name and number/email on the bag. Someone will be able to identify whatever the issue is. That looks more like bug activity than fungal, but nothing says it...

They go mad for millet sprouts, too. At least mine do. Certainly not permanent decor, but fun.

Re: How do you like your salad?
I spray it when it feels dry. If I let it get too dry, my tank swings too much on humidity in the winter.

Re: Why does okay sand say wash your hands after use?
It says that because of the silica content. There may be other minerals that would be harmful for small children to inhale or ingest, as well.

Re: Adding new substrate with isopods
Given how deep I sometimes find them in my garden, I'm sure they'll be fine.

Hah! My husband thought I'd spend the snowy time working on a new crabitat. Dude, there was SLEDDING!

Re: Substrate in a 20 gallon long
I'm curious about this, too. I need to look at the weight of an EE/playsand combo and ponder new, sturdier furniture options.
Re: Popcorn
About once a week, I skim off a few pieces of popcorn and put them aside before salting the big bowl. (I eat popcorn nearly every day.) I pop in coconut oil. When they're cool, I seal them in a plastic bag. Sometimes I toss it in spirulina of kelp, but I often just toss a piece or two in the food di...

Re: Favorite / Least favorite food
Mine adore nasturtiums, popcorn, apple slices, pecans, bee pollen, honey (treat). And autumnal (red) white oak leaves. I have yet to find an animal protein that they adore. Tuna, beef, chicken, salmon, catfish, fresh or cooked shrimp, and freeze-dried brine shrimp are all hit or miss. I should try e...

Re: Porcelain berry?
Thanks! I was curious about the oxalic acid, which is why I didn't feed them any of the berries or leave without confirmation.
Wait--do oxalates affect crabs the same way they'd affect mammals? I'm curious about that.

Re: Dry mix recipe
If I'm doing a big cooking night (or weeding my garden!!), I save anything crab-safe that would otherwise go into the compost and dehydrate it that night: carrots, apples, clover, sweet potatoes, greens, corn, beets, peppers, etc. Thin slices will be easier to pulverise. Once it's dry, I pound it wi...

Suppose I should unlurk
I have a long-standing habit of reading a forum for aaaages before I make an account. Then I lurk even longer until one day I start posting and eventually realize i never did a proper intro. We have three crabs in a ten gallon. We're probably upgrading to a 20L later this winter. My question: how do...

Porcelain berry?
Ampelopsis brevipedunculata
Most folks assume it's poisonous, but it's actually edible for humans. It doesn't taste all that great to a human, but it's not gonna hurt you.
It's invasive and I was pulling it today and I thought, "hrm, wonder if the crabs would eat it?"
Anyone try it?
