They hide for alot of reasons, most of which are not anything to worry about. They are nocturnal so they will hide most of the day, usually, and come out at night to play. I have the same set up. Line the pieces up correctly then put one corner in place and keep squeezing from there till the whole thing is in. Or you could stick two pieces of something else thin but strong in the groove to make kind of a ducks bill, then the glass should go in easily and once its in y...

Mine will bury during the day for 2-5 consecutive days before the stay down, and then once they are done molting and come up, they will "dig in" each day and come up at night for several nights before feeling confident enough(?) To stay up.
