Re: Hermes have been under for 2 months?
I have larger crabs that have stayed down for 2.5 years! It made for a pretty boring tank when all six were under for about 4-5 months. I feel like there is no point in digging. If the crab died, you can't save it and it's not necessarily harmful to the other crabs. If it's alive and molting, you ca...

Re: How often should you be replacing substate?
I'm a long time crab keeper and I've never changed out my sub completely. I still have my original sub from when I got my first crab in 2008-ish. My first tank was a 10 gallon. Later that same year I rescued a bunch of crabs--100's--and filled many, many tanks with crabs. I rehomed all but about six...

Re: Longest Molt Experience?
My old jumbo Molly (she's my "old jumbo" because she's been a jumbo for years) takes about 18-24 months to molt. My new jumbo (no name, has been a jumbo since molting last year) takes about 8 months.

Re: Is it to soon to Molt?
Bigger crabs take longer to settle in underground and to molt. I have two jumbos and both have taken over a year to molt.

For years they were my sole source of crab food. I've branched out to a few etsy stores, but hermitcrabpatch is still my go to.

Re: Crabby Questions
So sorry no one got to your questions! Crabs in the wild tend to stick together more for resource sharing than emotional support. In captivity, the resources are all readily available so they don't need teamwork to access anything. He's probably fine without a buddy, but if you wanted to give him a ...

Re: Heatmat
They'll be fine. The "cool off" spot is at the front of the tank. You can also set it on a thermostat or timer if you're worried.

Re: What kind of crab do I have??
Try to stay hands off and hands out of the aquarium as much as possible. Holding them is incredibly stressful and it takes them out of their proper heat/humidity. I do understand you were just taking a picture for identification purposes, but the more hands off/hands out you are, the faster your cra...

Re: I just got 2 hermit crabs and need some help.
I know that people have successfully kept crabs in plastic totes before. You really do need a reliable heat source that isn't going to melt your tote and/or risk a fire. Please read through these links that provide info on basic (minimal) crab care and safe foods. https://www.hermitcrabassociation.c...
