Hello, I was wondering if there was any way you could post a picture of the crabs. If not, please describe them to the best of your ability.
What color are they? Are their eyes round, like tubes or are their eyes somewhat flat, sorta like a rectangle?

Crabitat 7-3-2016
It's a bit of a mess, thanks to my jumbo, but I'm cleaning up the crabitat today. https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/13568967_1113991558674225_7298489987907317477_o.jpg Here's the front, with the calcium dish and food dish, with the moss pit farther back. https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.n...

How to remove permanent marker from shells
So, digging around in my shell pile, I found this wonderful shell that would probably make one of my crabs happy. It's a good size, and it's smooth. But the reason it had disappeared was because the place I got it from, wherever that was, had it decorated with permanent marker. Like a painted shell ...

Re: Hermit crabs "eating" vesicular basalt
What do you mean it's volcanic ash? I thought it was a very common, solid, igneous rock.
Also it often contains a lot of magnesium. Could they be after that?

Hermit crabs "eating" vesicular basalt
In my crabitat, I have one huge and thick cholla log going up onto the cork bark platform. I was put off by the fact that crabs oftentimes get wedged in the tubes in the past, so I plugged it with a rock in my room. One of many rocks, in fact. Turns out, from my recent geology class, that this rock ...

Re: Good digital thermometer/hygrometer?
I use a "All Living Things" Digital Hygrometer/Thermometer combo. Works really well.
Only problem I had was the battery didn't fit because a wire was in the way
After fiddling for a while I got it out of the way enough for battery to fit.

Crabitat Decor Suggestions?
I had the idea of cutting up my single cork-bark second level in favor of turning it into two platforms. I'd like to put a corner shower-caddie in the corner, no less, and next to it a cork bark half-platform. Next, to it will be the slopped cholla log that gets them up here in the first place. Then...

Re: Fungus gnats q and other stuff
When I recently got gnats in my crabitat, I put some flypaper out of reach in there. No one got to it. Except all the flies, fortunately.
They were gone in like 3 days.

Re: There is a spider in my crabitat
Should I have mercy and keep him?
He's very, very small. Larger than a pinhead but smaller than my fingernail. Surely a spider so small can't pierce the hard exoskeleton of my crabs?

There is a spider in my crabitat
This has come as a complete surprise. I caught it's movement with the most insane luck. Previously I had been invaded by a small number of fungus gnats but the application of out-of-reach-to-the-crabs flypaper, it was quickly resolved. But a spider?! I hear this is one of the more uncommon insect vi...

Re: My new 55 Gallon Upgrade! :D
The ultratherm is a type of heater, yes. It's an excellent one, too. It's electric, but the website I bought mine from says they operate for very cheap. Check out a website called ReptileBasics, go to "Products" on the top tab, and click "Ultratherm Heat Pads". I got the 11"x35", and it was only $27...
