hopefully they will keep their beautiful colors!
I love them already, they are so big but so gentle, they even let the ruggies eat next to them. But maybe that´s because they are still new and need to acclimatize in their new environment.
I visited a reptile expo last weekend (presumably the last one in my country..) I planned on getting new Crabs, which I did. There were more good hermit crab sellers than usual, which I think was great! I couldn't miss out on such an opportunity, because terrestrial hermit crabs are usually hard to ...
Thanks for the links! That are some great Ideas. @Ilovehermies74: The walls are just normal cork bark, I just cut the bark size I needed :) @aussieJJDude: haha, that might be why I never heard of it! :D Exactly, an iwagumi would not work for Hermit crabs, they would bury under the rocks and either g...
Well, depends on what you exactly mean by "removable top". The whole tank is made out of wood, so I'm able to "unscrew" and remove parts of the tank. :) But it is not really meant to be a removable top. Yea, I'm trying to find a way to be able to get the sand to be higher. But I currently have no id...
Thank you all for the great suggestions! I'll see what I can get for them to climb on. They absolutely love the cork bark on the back of the tank. They often sleep in the upper corners of the tank. I will at least add some plants and a moss pit to the enclosure. @landlubber: I tried to build a small...
I remodeled my hermit crab terrarium a bit. A few things about it: The waterdishes (which are currently big enough for my rugosus to submerge) will be replaced by bigger and deeper dishes soon. The sandy "beach part" is currently 4 inches deep, but I will fill it up to it's maximum (about 5 or 5.5 i...
Thank you again for your help. I think I will get straws, I've always wanted them but never had the guts to buy some.. I'm not a beginner in terms of exotic animal care, so it should be no problem to maintain the right temperature and humidity pretty well. :) I'll have to look for bigger water dishe...
Well, "inexpensive" might not be the right term.. 1 Dynastes hercules larva costs about 50 dollar in second instar, which means it has about another year to grow unnoticed inside the substrate. Adult beetles are far more expensive, depending on size and the length of their horns. D. hercules only li...
Dynastinae (rhino beetles) are not really easy to care for and breed. With a few exceptions.. They need a substrate of 1/2 "forest humus" (first layer from forests composed of leafed trees only, mainly oaks) mixed with 1/2 (a bit more than 1/2) rotting oak- or beech wood, not normal rotting one, the...
Sorry for my late answer... Really? Because here in europe, only straws are said to be extremely hard to keep, every other species (except purpureus maybe, but even these are not considered impossible..) is pretty much considered "doable if you know what you are doing". At least to my knowledge. Wel...
Thank you very much for your answers! @purpleperson: Yes, I too think that it also depends on the individual crabs. three of mine are pretty active in the afternoon, the rest i only see at night (most of them at about 2 in the morning (yes, I sometimes watch my animals at night, hahah) @landlubber: ...
Hi I'm new to this forum, so please have mercy if this is not the right subforum to start a thread of this kind. First of all, I have to say this has to be the best hermit crab forum worldwide! (well, at least in my opinion..) The current situation: The tank for my Hermits has a size of about 66 gal...
