Re: Couple of questions about my crabitat
It is hard to understand exactly your substrate from first post. I see colored hermit crab sand, then put down coconut fiber. If you replaced the colored sand with just coconut fiber then it's fine for crabs but probably want to mix with clean sand soon. If you mixed that colored sand with the fiber...

Re: Naked crab PP (back in old shell now)
Since 0 is really close to 9 that makes me wonder if the temp is 96. If so then would be a reason for streaking.

Re: Check out this book!
From the price I would say it's a college textbook. If that is required for the course they can bump the price pretty high. However once students pass they sell it used.

Re: Dropped crab!
Mine have fallen in my tall tank on edges of water dish, hard objects, etc. They are always fine. I mean I wouldnt drop them on purpose but falls happen and not much you can do when it does.

Re: Tank upgrade
The sub is a little over 8" deep and the set up only has 3 crabsGotButterflies wrote:Nice!
Edit: I would probably make substrate deep since you don't have much of a footprint.

Re: Tank upgrade
Only about 60gal but the door makes everything much easier to manage. Also being wood I could mount my ceramic heater and a dimmer switch on the side to control temp. The UV light and night viewing light were super easy to mount tooGotButterflies wrote:Very nice crabitat! How many gallons is that?

Re: Tank upgrade
No false bottom, mine has never leaked but I did a test prior to using it by filling and setting on paper towels for a few days. Every time I clean it I inspect it. I did just do a sub cycle, where I mix the sub from bottom and top together and there was no standing water. Taking it out is easy for ...

Re: Tank upgrade
I use a small painters tray. You can get them at Walmart or a hardware store. To prevent drowning I have a plastic mesh zip tied at the lip with silicon in the bottom. This is my fresh currently. In prep for a Strawberry I want to get my sea water is the old critter keeper that my first crabs were s...

Re: Odd behavior
Did he recently change shells?
If so he is likely modifying his shell. They produce a chemical that dissolves the shell slowly while rubbing with their little legs inside. Sea shells are thick and strong but land crabs need less weight and sea crabs need more protection.

Re: What is this crab doing?
This is usually a crab modifying their shell. They produce a chemical that helps them thin out the shell to fit better, make lighter, etc. if you notice some shells are "hot items" with your crabs that likely means they are already modified shells. Given the choice a crab generally chooses a "turn k...

Re: Newish crab mommy, surface molts and losing limbs!?
I use a humidifier, a cool must one, and tubing into the tank. If you go that route get one with changable mist volume, dimmer switch, and a toggle switch for power. This allows you to use an outlet timer and set automatic mist times. Of course I have a DIY 80g tank and a ceramic heat lamp on a dimme...

Re: Newist crab not molting
He may be molting. I'm not sure because he is burrowed behind the coco fiber climbing wall. Never had anything but digging molders so can't be sure but no smell and hasn't been out for about a week. I just didn't notice but if molting he started around when I made this thread lol

Re: Fountain, handmade, Anyone made one? I'm thinking it!
I made a fountain and I took it out. I ran into a problem where the water leaked the wrong way and flooded the bottom. Luckily my molting crabs had just gone down so they came back up and went down again. So be careful, tubing comes loose rocks shift whatever the reason. Also the submergable pumps u...
