Re: Talking to Hermit Crabs
Carmicle is my most active hermit crab My other PP, Olivia, is terrified of me. Whenever she sees me enter the room, she runs/falls/rolls away as fast as she can into a hiding spot [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Re: Bathing?
On another note - a hermit crab leaving his shell (unless changing to another shell) is not a good thing!

Re: Bathing?
Personally, I do not bath crabs unless they are new, and even then, I don't feel comfortable bathing them. I believe handling the hermit crabs stresses them out so I try to minimize that as much as I can. As long as you provide deep enough fresh + salt water bowls for them to fully submerge themselv...

Update? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Hi GotButterflies! Nina is a tough cookie! She's still in isolation, and in the shell I helped her into. She is surrounded by her old shell and with about 8 more, but she hasn't expressed any interest in them. She doesn't move much... She stays within a 1 in...

Re: Ultratherm UTH insulating questions
I live in Arizona, so temperature is not a problem. I have seen others, though, insulate their tank with Reflectix! They cover the whole back, where the heater is at

Re: Crab care isn't easy
After the substrate change, I would recommend the following in order of importance. 1. Use the bowls you have for food and add a small Tupperware of freshwater and saltwater ($1 at the Dollar store). 2. Buy new shells from JoAnn's or Michaels ($3 with a coupon). I see that one of your hermies is in ...

Re: Crab care isn't easy
You're crabs have survived this whole time so they are tough lil ones :) First thing is first though, you need to change the substrate. After that, you can upgrade your tank little by little at your own pace, but calcium sand is not good for your crabbies. Changing their sand will cost you less than...

Re: Crab care isn't easy
Another thing: JoAnn's or Michaels also sell shells and usually offer 40-60% off coupons. I just bought a bag for about $3 total that had at least 10 turbo shells. You can also buy a 79 cent plastic canvas for them to use as a climbing mat. I know what its like to be on a budget, but it is possible ...

Re: Crab care isn't easy
Another quick tip: the dollar store sometimes sells shells that hermit crabs can actually wear, or that can be used for food dishes. They also sell fake plants (make sure they are either plastic or silk and don't have any glitter or "berries" or anything with Styrofoam). You can also buy Tupperware ...
