Re: Molting Smell?

I have had my crabs since late October I brought them home rom Myrtle Beach and I live in the Boston area. One crab went down to molt within 2 weeks and was down for about 4 weeks. The other went down around Thanksgiving and I havent seen her since. I'm not sure if shes dead or alive, when you lift...

Re: Molting Smell?

First and foremost, I am still pretty new at caring for hermie crabs, but this is not something I am familiar with. I can say this - when Grog passed, it started with no smell, then changed to this strange bittersweet smell, then a sulpher-y smell (I ISO'ed her for a couple of days to ensure she had...

Re: New shells :)

That brings up something I was curious about - does anyone know if the coco sold at garden stores is safe for hermies? Pesticides or anything? I was noticing some at home depot and wondered about it

This is the stuff I get. It's kinda hiding in with the fish food at walmart

Re: Dried shrimp and bloodworms?

Do you have access to a walmart at all? They carry a very inexpensive dried shrimp food (I pay $1.67 a jar for it). I will take a pic of it and post the specifics when I get home

Re: Acceptable foods

Both tetrafauna types have ethoxyquin which i have read is very bad for crabbies. I am at the pet store as we speak looking - those are the only two on your list that they carry. Hope that helps

Re: Shell shop

I was in the same boat. I found a plastic, suction cup soap dish at walmart for a little under $3 - it's only about an inch deep and maybe 3.5" long, so it's perfect for a 10 gallon.

Re: Show us your exotics!

I have no exotics, only PPs, but I had to show the pic I managed to get of Pip while trying to sex him (the little bowl he is sitting in is 4" diameter) and the penny I added as a reference http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161201/722602acbd0a98862b6f671576b14963.jpg Sent from my SM-G860P using Tapa...

Re: Dead crab out his shell in FW pool

Oh geezy, I'm so sorry. I just lost my Grog a couple of weeks ago...there was no almost cried, I cried incessantly (I have a weak spot for critters). What they die of can be really hard to tell. In the case of Grog, I think it was a combo of age (she was huge) and stress (I'd only had her a month). ...

Re: Polishing shells?

So you just used a dremmel? I watched a video on YouTube and there was a warning to wear a mask because shell dust causes some very bad lung disease I can't spell or pronounce lol I'm going to ask my stepdad for his dremmel or maybe just buy my own cuz that is exactly what I am talking about! Re: Polishing shells?

Generally speaking, yes, it can be done. I did try just polishing (stupid me forgot to take a picture) but I was more curious about removing the calcification so that the nacre is exposed. Using a dremel, it can be done. I will say that it was very time consuming to get through the calcification, bu...

Re: Sheldon the Shy

It kinda looks like fossilized wood with some druzy areas (hehehe ditto on the rock obsession). Really cool idea with the fish bowl!

I've been wondering the same. I have a dremel tool and was going to do some experimenting this weekend. I will let you know the results

Re: Is she dead or molting?

Sadly, it was quite apparent when I got home from work that Grog was most definitely gone. It is surprising how attached you can get to a critter in only a month. Thank you for all of the advice and tips. I've been reading on hermit crabs since I got them, and it seems like there are so many contrad...

Re: Is she dead or molting?

I appreciate the responses - I sadly don't think it will be necessary to fill out the template. I noticed a smell this morning, a light sulphur smell, where there has been no smell whatsoever previously. Couldn't do anything about it as I had to get ready for work, so I'm going to verify when I get...
