Re: safe/unsafe woods?
Thank you for the link, very helpful. Now I need to learn some tree identification. One of the few I know we have around here (and I can identify by the leaves) is locust (but I don't know if it's "black" or not) and we also have wild, walnut trees, I think they are referred to as black walnut; they...

top 10 hermit crab habitats- please help
There is a webpage I ran across with a top 10 best hermit crab habitats (for purchase) and #1 on their list looks very bad (the crabs will die if someone comes across this page and buys this for a home for their crabs) This was just published on March 11, 2019. https://mylifepets.com/best-hermit-cra...

safe/unsafe woods?
Is there a list to which woods are safe or not safe? Can I go out in the woods and get my own for the crabitat for them to climb on?

Re: Enrichment Toy?
That is really cool. Did any sand get inside as it rolled around?
I admit the bugs in the background were distracting. I kept thinking, "are those bugs in the tank?" (mine has no bugs)

Re: best size Ultratherm to use for 40 gal tank and putting netting along back wall
I went ahead and ordered the 11x35 .. I never used a thermostat. If I end up needing one of those, are there recommendations for the best one to get?

best size Ultratherm to use for 40 gal tank and putting netting along back wall
I recently got a 40 gal breeder tank (18x36 and 17" high) and I want to double check the size of the ultratherm I'd need before I order. Beanfarm has Ultratherm Heat Pads 11 x 35 in. for $36 so it seems this would cover the entire length (left to right) of the tank, and at 11" that leaves me 6" for ...

Re: 55 Gallon Upgrade
That is super nice. I know how you must feel. I've had a 10gal for 2.5 years and just recently purchased a 40gal breeder(18x36) -not sure how your 55 compares, but, I haven't yet set mine up (still getting everything I need for inside it) and can't wait until it's ready. Do you have a link for your ...

Re: Help Improve Our Resources Section (weblinks)
what about DesignzByMeg on Etsy - climbing nets made from hemp. I didn't see that on the list. Was thinking of ordering one soon and trying to find all the "net" options out there.

Re: Is this ok?
Honey Nut Cheerios? I'm no expert but don't they add iron to that cereal and table salt? I was under the impression metals were not good for them, or table salt (but natural sea salt is good.) I'd just give them rolled oats and pop some plain popcorn with hot air popper as treats. So no additives.

Re: Surprise Power Outage
AwesomeHermit: when you say your crabs survived 50 degree during an outage, was the crabitat actually 50 inside the tank and if so for how many hours or days? I'm trying to find out whether one of my 2 crabs could be dead - we had a 16 hr power outage last night, it dropped to 57 degrees in the tank...

Re: POWER OUTAGE - MOLTING CRABS
Did they continue to do well after they surfaced? My power was out for 16 hrs last night and the tank got to 57 for I don't know how many hours before I realized it and was able to warm it again. I have two, and one seems to be fine, but the other hasn't budged all day and I'm fearing the worst. (Ne...

Re: How do you know if a shell has lacquer?
The quote you referenced was in regard to bottled (spring) water. I do not purchase bottled water because I can get it myself for free... I fill up my jugs at the source (at a farm in the country, coming out of the ground) .. it has not been treated, so there are no chemicals in there. It's what hum...

Re: How do you know if a shell has lacquer?
The spring water does not have chlorine in it.. I fill up my jugs fresh at the spring so I have no need of a dechlorinator.. We do not use the tap water for drinking or for the crabs ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Re: How do you know if a shell has lacquer?
I found this page after I posted, http://happyhermitcare.tumblr.com/post/97948148880/hermit-crab-shell-guide-on-shell-types-and-buying It says "One thing you should be aware of is 'natural’ lacquered shells. These shells appear to be natural and smooth which can very easily be mistaken for polishing...
