Re: How can I get my crabs to be more active of like me
Hello! Hermit crabs have modified gills and need the humidity to breathe. The HCA recommends a minimum of 80 for humidity. They dig down to de-stress, relax and to molt. They are also prey animals. It is normal for them to hide. If you provide them with coconut hides or other areas to hide, they mi...

Re: How can I get my crabs to be more active of like me
Have they molted since you got them? Before molting, they get lethargic and they dig holes a lot when they are awake. That's all I can think of. Your temperature is great, but they like it better when the humidity is above 80%. I use a whisper air pump that I got off of amazon, some airline tubing,...

Is Kirkland's sea salt useable?
I buy bottled salt water from pet smart just for the convinience but my mom says it's too expensive and she just wants me to use the sea salt we have at home. It's a Kirkland brand that we buy from Costco and it doesn't contain iodine. Is it safe to use for my crabs saltwater, and if so, what propor...

How can I get my crabs to be more active of like me
So I've had one hermit crab for about 4 months and another for about 2 months. I notice whenever I come by their tank, they always hide in their shells, but most of the time, they're always digging holes and no where to be seen. The tank conditions are 70-87% in humidity and about 80 degrees. I supp...

Re: Humidifier
Spraying the tank can cause flooding- so be careful with that. You can buy an Acurite unit at Walmart for $8. Tells you temp & humidity- and the high & low of each for the last 24 hours. You can find them in the home improvement section- by the air filters. [emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using Tapata...

Re: Humidifier
A humidifier increases the humidity, not the temperature. What temperature is their tank now, and the room they are in? I have to use a heating pad for the little tank in my bedroom in the summer, because I run the AC so cold that gets too cold for the crabbies. The temperature in my house is about...

Re: Humidifier
What are your conditions like? I have 2 moss pits in my tank that keeps my humidity nice, and Jack seems to enjoy munching on[emoji38] My thermometer/hygrometer was a double unit I think I found either at a local petsmart or on amazon...I can't remember which. It runs fairly accurate. It may have b...

Humidifier
I feel like the temperature in my room is a little too cool for a crab habitat because it's summer in Arizona and the fan is always on. Would it help make my room a little more warmer if I put a humidifier in my room? Would it raise the temperature in the tank? I'm trying to ensure the little crabs ...

Re: not sure if my crab is alive
I just reread your original post. I did not realize you reburied the crab and exo. Is everything covered in dirt from when you redug them up? Edit: if it is, I would very gently rinse it in dechlorinated freshwater. Never rebury. When they dig they build caves so they have air to breathe. I'm so so...

Re: not sure if my crab is alive
Okay, first and foremost, in the future, you should never dig up crabs. It sounds like your crab has molted. You need to isolate your crab, and let it eat it's exoskeleton (which is it's old skin). Do not handle the crab during this sensitive time. No other food or water is needed - it needs heat &...

Re: not sure if my crab is alive
ISO by putting them in a small container in the tank or sticking a soda bottle cut in have into the around them, with the cap off for air exchange. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I used a big spoon to lift up the crab and a lot of sand around it and I gently placed it into my ISO container full...

not sure if my crab is alive
I have two crabs. Shelly is my first one and hermie is the other. Shelly is a little bigger than hermit and after I bought hermie, both crabs dug under. I didn't think it was a problem but I realized that they dug hole right next to each other. Today, I got a 10 gallon tank and so I went to dig up t...

Re: Crab keeps digging under??
So I have a 1.5 gallon tank and I'm going to get. 10 gallon very soon. In the 1.5 tank, I have about 6 inches of sand and one of my crab (Shelly) dug under and I left her there to do her thing. She was on the very bottom, touching the bottom of the tank and just chillin. I got a new crab a couple d...
