Re: Real Spanish Moss
It is safe, but it doesn't work like ground mosses. It won't hold moisture or help with humidity the way spagnum.will. The non-pet kind sold in craft stores is sprayed with insecticide and the pet kind I've seen is dyed which is why it is rarely mentioned. It is LOADED with parasites in the wild. C...

Re: Keeping down weight in a large tank?
Crazy stories! How do you "hide" two tanks of that size?!!! Can you imagine the things that could be hidden in an old house?!!! And a dirt basement?!! I would love a basement!! I would love an old house! Well, not if I couldn't have my tanks! [emoji6] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Basement? Wh...

Real Spanish Moss
I've been reading around on different posts regarding Spanish Moss and the consensus seems to be that it is bad for hermit crabs but can not find anywhere where it says why it's bad. What I'm wondering is can I use real Spanish Moss - I live in S. Florida and the stuff grows like CRAZY on palm trees...

Re: Cleaning a new tank
Hello! I recently cleaned my previously used as a freshwater aquarium 55gal tank to make a new home for my hermits. I had a bit of calcium build up on the upper 1" of the tank near the top, and used a razor scraper blade with a handle that I found at Harbor Freight for 89 cents. Usually, I clean new...

Re: Do I need to have heat at all?
Hello! Welcome to the HCA! :) I live in Florida, and I use UTHs on all three of my crabitats. The only time I don't need them is summer. It's rainy right now, so the weather is a little cooler than usual, but it was 93. I recommend it. The crabs will do a lot better with 80-85 as their constant tem...

Re: Do I need to have heat at all?
If you use a thermostat (Zilla or similar - there's a lot of good brands even at the hardware store), you can set it at 80F and it can give you peace of mind that the crabs are warm enough, but you won't cook them. The thermostat will cycle the Ultratherm on and off as needed to maintain 80F in the...

Re: Do I need to have heat at all?
While I don't live in Florida...I can tell you that your ideal heat is around 80-85 degrees, owing to most crabs coming from south of Florida. (Even crabs sold in Florida are often not from Floridian populations - which may be better adapted to cooler temps - because pet stores/beach shops get them...

Do I need to have heat at all?
Hello! This is my first posting on this site, and have a quick question for all those experts out there! I've been reading a lot on this site the past couple weeks and decided this is definitely the place for info on my hermit crabs. I'm in the process of moving my 3 PP crabs to a 55 gal tank, 48Lx1...
