Re: Canadian adopters

KAWARTHA LAKES, ONTARIO WILLING TO ADOPT MARINE AND LAND HERMIT CRABS I'm willing to drive at least two hours to pick up hermit crabs. I'm looking to adopt marine (aquatic) hermit crabs (scarlet, blue legged, Halloween, zebra, etc.). I have a 90g, predator-free reef tank. I currently have 5 scarlet...

Re: Deep Coconut Dishes

That's what I understood, too, but apparently coconuts aren't affected? I don't know, this one lab tested a bunch of coconuts, and they didn't have any traces of pesticides.

Re: Hello!!!

Yw! :) Well I would just like to add that I do also believe (though am still sorta of conflicted by it) that saving hermits left to suffer in bad pet store conditions may be classified as a rescue. I really don't like to support the wild caught pet trade but I also don't believe they Should suffer ...

Re: Boardwalk Crabs at End of Season

Okay, thanks guys! I bought a new terrarium last week for the kids (i.e., my five PPs), and it's 54"x21"x24" (LxDxH), so I have plenty of room for more crabs. I've adopted a number of small parrots these past few years, so I'm used to paying "adoption fees". Although the last pair I adopted (red-fro...

Boardwalk Crabs at End of Season

So, I've been reading a lot, and apparently tons of boardwalk stores sell hermit crabs (where I live, we don't have boardwalk stores or anything like that). Then at the end of the season, unsold crabs are just thrown into dumpsters or are dumped on beaches. Well, I was wondering if anybody takes the...

Re: Hello!!!

Hi! That is a lovely set up. I too am a huge fan of the natural look and try to keep my tank as natural looking as I can jus because I love the visual appeal. Yeah the marine crab story is very sad indeed! My fam and I travel to the beach about once a year and we always catch lil crabbies, look at ...

Re: Nacho's 55 adventure!

Hmm, definitely looks a little naked in there. I'd gather up a bunch of fresh hermit crab-safe leaves, dry them in the oven, then toss some in the tank. Also, they probably want you to add some crab-safe branches for them to climb. Try some cork bark hides, too. Also, add some safe bark in there to ...

Re: Introducing my first crabs in 15 years!

Your crabs are pathetically small. Even my tiny Oliver could beat them up on the playground! But seriously though, your guys are freaking cute. I can't believe somebody bothered collecting them from the wild when they were that small! Just some advice: they'd probably like it if you went out and col...

Re: Deep Coconut Dishes

Well, I guess I should've included "chemical-free" only if the coconut is organic . Sadly, it's not organic. However, apparently pesticide use isn't as much of a concern as it is with other plant foods. While a lot of farmers do in fact use pesticides, coconuts have a very thick husk protectin...

Re: Isopod Question

Hmm, so October then? A bunch of the isopods I caught were already pregnant, so I had a bunch of little babies pop up after less than a week. I'm actually thinking of maybe putting the babies in a different jar (I have them in a gigantic jar right now), let them mature a bit, then dump them in with ...

Deep Coconut Dishes

Hey guys. Last week, I decided to quit using those nasty plastic dishes. I mean, they looked nice, but plastic leaches chemicals (even BPA- and phthalate-free plastic), and even the deepest dishes are too shallow for larger hermit crabs to soak in. So, I took an old coconut that I had originally pla...

Re: Crabbing Smells: Is there anything I can do?

I find my crabitat starts to smell very, umm, "organic" if I don't get the air circulating enough in there. So, I take a small battery operated fan, reach my arm all the way to the bottom of the tank, point the fan upwards, then turn it on. That way, I can blow all of the old, stinky humid air out, ...

Re: Isopod Question

Not to try to hijack this thread, but how long do you have to raise them in captivity before they're considered pathogen-free? I caught some of those roly-poly guys well over a month ago, then I caught the guys who can't roll into balls a couple of weeks ago. I call them land lobsters and water pigs...

Re: Telling Individuals Apart

Thanks guys! My dad picked up Kai's two other friends a week or so ago, and I was discouraged that I wouldn't be able to tell anyone apart. Then, Basil (he was the one who came with Oliver and was wearing a Babylonia shell) decided to change to an almost identical shell to what the two new guys are ...

Re: Telling Individuals Apart

Nice -_-. Well, so far, we have Oliver who's small and is constantly on the go and is extremely confident, BG who spends 90% of their time hiding, and Kai who's terrified of me and is obsessed with shells (he changes his shell at least twice a day). Man, hopefully Kai is the only shell-obsessed one,...
