Sometimes hermit crabs fight. I don't know if it gets rough enough that one loses its big claw but if a hermit crab loses a limb it will grow back eventually. I've had a crab that once lost one leg and it grew back fully in about a month.

I think that they are both probably molting at the same time. I do know that hermit crabs are social animals, so getting another hermit crab i think was a good move in the long run if the molting goes well.

I do have to admit however that back then I had the old crab for a few years but was still inexperienced with taking care of crabs. As a result, the habitat was pretty low quality . Since then my habitat has greatly improved, but the habitat years prior was not a happy looking place.

I've heard that moss is great at maintaining humidity and that hermit crabs love climbing on them! Also, if I ever need to boost the humidity i just use a spray bottle and mist the habitat.
