Thank you. Do you think it goes bad longer than that? Or even in a sealed container might evaporate some and become too salty?GotButterflies wrote:I keep my mixed saltwater for one week. You can mix smaller amounts than one gallon if you would like.

Re: Best salt for crabs?
Hello :) Welcome to the HCA! :) A lot of us use Instant Ocean. Red Sea is good too :) Just make sure that it is marine salt for making saltwater fish tanks. :) Is this what you mean? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171022/a3668c696c1990ce090a80ad85a91672.jpg Sent from my SM-G930R4 using Tapatalk...

Lol. That's good!wodesorel wrote:Okay, now that the DEA is going to be knocking on my door due to my search history-
I had never heard that about magic mushrooms, but it looks like the corn is just used as a food source and has to be infected deliberately with the spores first. It is not naturally occuring.

Re: Frustrated
I just upgraded to a 40 gallon and it took about one and a half 50 pound bags of play sand mixed with an 8 quart bag of eco earth to make 6 inches. It took a lot of mixing, but works well so far. Lol. I bought 4 bags. I didn't know how much I needed. I can return what I don't use. Sent from my SM-G...

Re: Mushroom
I remove them when I see them as I'm not sure what species they are. They are not the edible button mushrooms in grocery stores. I've never had the hermits eat them, but the springtails in my tanks go crazy for them. Could they be hallucenigenic (sp?) mushrooms? I read they can be grown from corn k...

Re: Hermit crab sand
No, calcium sand is considered dangerous. It can harden when wet. The HCA recommends just regular playsand, which is much cheaper! You can get that at Lowes, Home Depot, Toys R Us, sometimes Ace Hardware. Made by Quicrete :) I got this at Home Depot. Is it the right sand. They had 2 types of play s...

How is recommended to put the hoses in with a screen top lid? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk We do recommend a sealed lid, but you could use snips or something of that sort and cut open the vents a bit to fit in the tubing. Just be careful of sharp edges that could cut the line. I'm setting up ...

Re: UNSAFE HIDE
Honestly I'd still be careful. The fumes from the pine in a non aerated container can build up, while in the wild they can air out. Stay safe! Yes if you chuck a fresh piece in. :) Otherwise, a log you find in a store for example has had enough time to 'cure' and most of the fumes (phenols) have ha...

If I do find mold on the bottom how do I get rid of it?wodesorel wrote:It's really your choice. I know of many long term crabbers who use them with no ill effects. Watch for mold though, they can sometimes get nasty underneath and that isn't good for your health.

Ohhhh okay I also missed the fact that u already moved him. I'd take Gotbutterflies advise and Find him to see if he is okay. She is very experienced and knows best. Ok. If he's still alive should I then leave him half buried? Will he burrow down again? Or just leave him on top. If he's alive - i'd...

Re: Tank size
Because they are very delicate post moult... their new integument is soft and pale and will gradually harden up. Any dents in claws or twisted legs sustained at this point will harden into lasting deformities til the next moult. Significant deformities will have to be autotomised (dropped). Stressi...

Ok. I did buy some small rocks. Is it ok if the plastic canvas is a color rather than plain white? I don't think it's paint.Happyhermiehome wrote:I use glass craft rocks in the bottom of mine. It weighs the plastic down. I have also used spare shells that my crabs don't care for.

Re: Daytime food
I feed each night and leave the same food out till the next nightly feeding. I also have some that are day eaters. I will dump it if it's super stinky in the morning when I walk by the tank lol but will replace with a bit of dried mix. I also have a leaf litter bin and moss pits, sweet gum bark and...
