Re: Why won't my crabs eat?!

For dried flowers you have a few options: if you garden (indoors or out) by using natural fertilizers like sheep poop as opposed to bottled ferts or fertilizer stakes, you can use safe list flowers that you harvest. (Avoid greenhouse plants, unfortunately, unless you have access to an organic flori...

Re: Tank size

Nooooo-no-nope. Shells on, always. Like bicycle helmets on little kids riding bikes. Or seat belts. They moult in their shells, they dig in their shells, and the only time they ideally are out of shell is to change shells topside. A crab who emerges from a dig shell-less has got its shell stuck, or...

Re: Tank size

a crab comes out of a molt will be very sandy, so he will track sand everywhere: water pool, food dish. that's how we found out when our first crab came up after a 5 weeks molt. but it will only work if you have only one molter in the tank. They come out without a shell, right? That's when they get...

Re: Why won't my crabs eat?!

Crabs crave different things at different times. Have you tried offering dried flowers (such as chamomile, clover, or calendula), or leaf litter (dried maple & oak are common faves)? Birch bark may also attract them. As might organic worm castings. Poop is something they rely on in the wild. Deer, ...

Re: Tank size

I would wait till the buried guy comes up :) How would I really know if he came up if he only comes out at night? I could smooth the surface but if they tunnel he could come up in a different spot. :? I saw 2 of the 3 the other evening. And 1 of those I see pretty much every evening. I guess being ...

Thank you. I think I did see that at Petco today.

Re: Daytime food

hi, i like to leave non spoiling munchies out like Lady J (fd worms/coral/leaves/bark/egg shells) but i put fresh food out every day to 2 days. im a daily mister/checker. so if something is too far off/moldy i pull it out. also if something yummy comes in I like to share. Each crab has their own fe...

Re: Tank size

^^ I couldn't agree more! I would try to aim for a 40 Breeder if possible - less upgrading down the road if you don't overcrowd. They measure 36Lx18Wx16H. They're nice starter tanks IMO and many love the floor print... Craigslist, LetGo, OfferUp, etc. Search reptile, aquarium, terrarium, tank - Rem...

Re: very new crab owner with many many questions

Hiya, just wanted to throw in that not only will you not be judged for finding them creepy, but I super-love that you're going to all this trouble for animals you wouldn't necessarily have chosen... kudos! :D Initially, getting that 80° & 80% humidity/temperature going steady in your tank can be a ...

Daytime food

Should I leave food for them during the day? It seems like they never come out anyway. I have a cuttlebone in there but it doesn't look used.

Re: Tank size

Thank you guys! I saw a 40 gal tank in a pet store today (not shopping for that) and thought wow! Why would I want a 20gal? Lol. I'll look around for a 40.

Re: very new crab owner with many many questions

Haha don't feel bad about thinking they are creepy! Many many crabbers here are "hands off" with their crabs only touching them when it's necessary. They don't require human attention and affection or playtime out of the tank. Some people do do those things but to each his own. Thank you! I a...

Tank size

I have what I guess are 3 small hermit crabs in a 15gal tank. With all the items in it there's really no walking space. And I never see them climb over stuff. I've been reading they need room to walk around. I'm thinking of getting a 20 gal long but I just transferred them to this a week ago. Will t...

Re: Canned fish

All kinds of meat can be fed cooked or raw. See what they like, as long is its 'prepared' in a safe manner its fine. Remember, in the wild they dont have cooked foods, so they are fine being fed raw. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk Ok. Thanks. That's so much easier too. I've read though raw is...
