Re: What are your crabs up to?

Well, now that they've both molted, I decided to add a bit more substrate and a few more shells as well and tonight is apparently shell swap night! I have been going in to look at them every hour or so to see how they like the new arrangement and every time I go in, they are in different shells! Sha...

Hermit wheel!

Shallan found the running wheel tonight that I put in the tank a few weeks ago! I think that I may have scared her taking a picture but I was so happy that I had to share! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191102/4fff23ffdcc6140fb382a9d053cd0cd6.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191102/cb30b0e...

Another molter up!

The beginning of fall (in the US) must be the best time to molt because my other crabby Kaladin just came from a molt too! That's within a week of my female, Shallan! Happy crabbies!

Eating shells?

So, as I mentioned last week, my medium size crab Shallan just came up from a molt and she has been out wandering around and I have been noticing that she seems to be eating one of the bigger shells that I have in the tank and I am wondering why she would do that? Does she need more calcium? Are cut...

Re: We have a molter!

Congrats. I understand the betta situation... the amount of in breeding hasnt been kind to these fish, and genetic inferior stock leads to reduced lifespan and generally more sickly fish. I kinda gave up on them after my last boy died a couple of years back, and will only buy from a private breeder...

We have a molter!

Well, Shallan has completed her second or third (can't quite remember because they both hide constantly! Lol!) molt with me this past week in the 2 years since I got her and Kaladin is going to be right behind her because both of them were down! It makes me feel so good that I am taking good enough ...

Re: Nighttime digging!

Many of us use a mixture. 5 parts of play sand (available in big 50 pound bags cheap at hardware stores) with 1 part moistened EE. It hold the shape well, helps with humidity, and is much cheaper than using all EE. Unless there is a rare emergency like a flood or bacterial bloom, you also don't nee...

Nighttime digging!

Oh my goodness! I have not seen my crabs up in a while but I know that they are active when I am not looking because they keep burying their water dishes! I am not sure how they do this but I know they are doing it at night because I fill up the water dishes before bed and every morning I come in to...

Re: More hermie wheel fun & a crab fight

You've got to wonder when you see behaviors like that of Brutus if these animals are capable of feeling the effects of the trauma that they must have suffered being captured from the wild and possibly held in poor conditions before being sold. Not denegrating the people who now own the crabs because...

Re: What are your crabs up to?

Shallan is enjoying climbing on the new toys that I made for her from some materials my husband brought home from work specifically for the crabs! They aren't spoiled or anything! Image

Popcorn fanatics!

My crabbies are popcorn fanatics! I have one crab that is always hiding under the substrate except for possibly at night when I don't see him and tonight I put some popcorn in and turned the lights off. I just went back in to see if they had done anything with it and found that my shy guy had almost...

Re: Hanging out

Of course! One of mine is pretty friendly and is basically just like, "Oh hey! How's it going?!" and goes on with her business but the other one flips himself backwards in order to get away from me and I can almost imagine him yelling, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" I pick up and hold the...

How hot is too hot?

Just a quick question here about whether hermit crabs can get too hot? I live in an area that has a heat index warning tomorrow with an actual temperature of 99 and heat indexes of over 110 so my question is, tonight my power went out because of a thunderstorm and I am wondering if the hermit crabs ...
