Re: Tank cover and humidity
I would say get a bigger UTH but your temp is good. Using straight eco earth is fine and I personally use just it as my substrate since it holds moisture easier. I had the same problem with a tank lid that isn't solid either. Laying an old bath towel over the lid is easy and works great for keeping ...

Re: Shivering crab
Lol yeah they do that a lot, it used to freak me out when I first saw it. So far I've witnessed mine doing it to clean out their shells, groom their back legs, shove stuff in their shells, and modify the inside of their shells.

Re: Help
Using straight coconut fiber (eco earth) is an easy way to help maintain humidity levels. A long time ago I saw suggestions on here to use salt water with the substrate to inhibit mold growth and it has worked really well for me. Added bonus, occasionally my crabs will chow down on the coconut fiber...
Re: Ride Home
Coconut fiber on it's own works perfectly as tank substrate and helps maintain humidity. Pet stores are a treasure trove of cheap supplies and great tank items everywhere but the hermit crab section lol. Fish section generally has the cheapest prices on dried shrimp and dried blood worms. In this se...

Re: Lethargic and not eating
You definitely need to pick up Instant Ocean or some other marine salt. I used the petsmart salt water when first started and while it's enough to keep your crabs alive, it's not what they need. I've noticed, I haven't had a single crab death during a molt since I made the switch a few years ago. I ...

Re: Crab stress?
When in doubt, just wait. I've been nervous because all of Christmas break, I only saw two of my crabs. I took care of them as normal and held off on changing the substrate. Well I'm home after two days of moving back into my dorm and a third crab decided to grace me with its presence. Maybe fresh f...

Re: Hoarding Food!
Yeah, I've tossed shrimp tails to my crabs a few times and they loved them. First time I set them out, I didn't even get the tank lid close before my smallest guy started to steal one away. I dont give shrimp tails that often as the crabs do love to secret them away which leaves me with more mold an...

Re: Size Differences Between Crabs?
I personally have had tiny, medium, and large crabs together in the same tank with no problem. They've grown so much this past year or so that I feel like I now have two jumbos, a large, and a medium coexisting peacefully. Only incident I've had with a small/tiny crab is back when I first got my cra...

Re: Smart Crabs
They certainly can learn to an extent. Back when I first introduced a hamster wheel to my tank none of my crabs went near it. I finally popped a crab in the wheel myself; once one crab figured out what the wheel did, the others soon followed. My crabs have also learned that when the wheel is off cen...

Re: Adding a hamster wheel and I have a few questions
Hope I'm not too late but the wheel you were looking at is pretty much the same one I use in my tank. I hung it from the top of my tank with command hooks and it has worked perfectly with no modifications. The ridges actually provide enough traction that none of my crabs had any problems cranking t...

Re: I know everyone asks about this but...
Depending on your substrate he could be eating it. I have pure coconut fiber made with salt water and I find my crabs chowing down on it all the time. I've also found them eating the sides of their coconut hut and the wet end of the attached rope ladder.
As long as he is active, he's eating something.

Re: switching the cycle
I wouldn't worry that much about light cycles. My crabs have no set schedule, my tank light is a simple bendy clip on desk lamp and they're active as ever. For example I was sick and literally slept for the past two days so my light hasn't been on at all. Now tonight I've had it on all night so far ...

Re: Playing on the wheel
The wheel is the best thing I've ever put in my tank. My crabs do all sorts of crazy things with it now but my favorite thing is that they have learn to take turns. It's fascinating to watch them patiently wait and switch out. Of course, there are times when a crab doesn't wait and those scuffles ar...

Re: Why a lid/cover is so important!!
I just can't get over how your crab is a mirror image of my own escape artist right down to the same shell. If I can figure out how to insert a pic, I'll post one. My big guy somehow managed to still lift the lid enough to get out with a whole 20lbs of Instant Ocean on top. Lol I ended up ducktaping...
