Re: Shell rot or color variation?
Oh yes, I had forgotten the name. Yes it is a really beautiful shell. Calypso is in a white murex but it's stained from the old coconut fiber substrate so doesn't look as nice now. I would think the murex shells would be heavy, but whatever floats their boats! I am going to order some turbos, since ...

Re: What are these pink things in my cage?
I rescued a crab recently, and while it was quarantining in a tupperware I put a damp yellow kitchen sponge in there for humidity. Well, even though the crab had plenty of food, it started eating the sponge and pooping yellow poops! LOL. Needless to say, I removed the sponge.

Re: Shell rot or color variation?
Update: I introduced the new crabby (now named "Frodo") to Calypso and the crabitat. They spent time having antennae and shoving battles; Calypso was actually more aggressive even though Frodo is larger. Calypso kept pushing Frodo upside down and climbing on him/her. I watched closely but didn't int...

Re: Shell rot or color variation?
Well, thanks again for the feedback. Since it's getting late I'm going to wait and introduce the new crabby to the tank tomorrow morning, so I can keep an eye on them as they get acquainted. I hope it will go well! *fingers crossed*

Re: Shell rot or color variation?
Ok thank you. Are my pictures good enough? I just took some more and can upload them if needed. Do you think the crab looks healthy? I do not see any limb deformation. I'm really chomping at the bit wanting to introduce the crabby to the crabitat. With crabs, usually poor diet tends to wash out colo...

Re: Shell rot or color variation?
Thank you. I'm just trying to be really careful, since I recently deep-cleaned the tank and added brand-new substrate. I did find some photos of shell rot and it looks different from what I can tell. I'll put the links below in case someone else finds this thread. I'm wondering if the crab looks dar...

Shell rot or color variation?
Hi, I posted several weeks ago about a PP crab I rescued (my friend found it wandering the streets). I've had new crabby in a tupperware and it's been doing well. It switched from its ugly too-small painted shell to a new bigger natural shell (it actually tried two before settling on the big one), a...

Re: Rescued feral crab quarantine
Thanks for the replies so far! I forgot to mention in my original post that I already have one PP in a 40 gal tank. I've had Calypso for over ten years. Calypso's friend Stitch died about a year ago, so I'd been meaning to get Calypso a new friend anyway. I live in South Carolina and have been battl...

Rescued feral crab quarantine
My friend recently discovered a PP hermit crab on the loose, scrambling through his neighborhood. It's in a painted shell that is much too small. :( I've agreed to try and rehab the little crabby. It's currently in quarantine in a large tupperware. The poor thing was so excited to be offered water a...

Re: Crabby genius?
i have the exact climbing branch Yeah I still have it but removed it because I wanted a more natural looking crabitat, plus Calypso kept getting stuck. Although I'm thinking that, if I get a new friend or two for Calypso, who are smaller crabs, it might be a nice refuge for them to hide away from t...

Re: What are your crabs up to?
I agree. you should get calypso a new freind. BTW, i am a huge pirates of the carrabian fan, so i love the name! Thanks! I'm definitely going to get Calypso a new friend or two. I wanted to wait and make sure Calypso was good and healthy (after Stitch died). I've talked with one person about possib...

Re: What are your crabs up to?
i have been looking for a climbing wall but petco does not have any. can you add me as a friend in your user profile, KitKat7? i already did the same. I will add you here in a sec... You're talking about the coconut fiber sheets? Yeah I might add that to cover the opening on the side of the tank (i...
