Is your substrate moist enough to hold it's shape?
If so, like Motor said, they dig and make caves and know what they are doing, LOL!
Yes, I use all purpose sand and playsand. It is wet, but not too wet that it’s sloppy. It’s like the perfect texture for sandcastles. Thank you!

Re: Crab hole, no vents

Don't worry, the crabs know what they are doing. They have been digging and doing silly crabby things for thousands of years before they became pets. As long as we maintain the proper tank conditions, offer the right foods, shells, fresh and saltwater they will take care of the other stuff on their...

Crab hole, no vents

My crab has recently been digging tons of holes, I think to prep for molt because it’s been about 8 months since he has. All of the holes he has dug have had little holes where he can breathe, but the one he is in right now, I don’t see any! I can see his hole because he dug it against the glass, an...

Re: Molting crab might be dead? Possible infestation?

I wish I could help. I have never had this happen to me before and I haven't heard of this. Please don't blame yourself. I think that it would be best to leave your crabbies where they are and wait and see what happens. I meant to do some research about this but then life got into the way, sorry abo...

Re: Molting crab might be dead? Possible infestation?

Please don't feel to bad, Choandchip, I think we've all felt that feeling where "it's all my fault that it happened". From what you said it looks like you've really worked hard to keep your crab's healthy and happy. I'm not sure how long ago you got your crab, but his experience in the store could ...

Re: Molting crab might be dead? Possible infestation?

If you go to the 'food' section, there is lots of info about hermit crab nutrition. Safe and unsafe foods lists, nutrition pyramid, etc. What brand of dechlorinator do you use? What kind of hygrometer/ thermometer do you use? If you have 'many' holes in the lid for ventilation, I would worry that t...

Re: Molting crab might be dead? Possible infestation?

I'm so sorry for your loss! This is what I think might be your problem regarding molting. First of all, I think it's best that you avoid crab pellets entirely, because they add bad chemicals to commercial crab food that is NOT beneficial to the crabs. And make sure you are not forgetting animal pro...

Does he have a horrible odor of stinky fish? If so he might be dead.

making molting safer

Hello everyone, I am very sad today because I have just discovered that my crab, Cookie, has most likely passed during molting. I had noticed he had gone into molt, and weeks later I looked under the hut he had been underneath, and found him with a little bit of mold on him. :( I have created a quar...
