I would check out your gauges. It sounds like you may not be getting an accurate reading. I know the analog ones I bought "specifically for hermit crabs" wouldn't go over X degrees, even though there was more room for it to go on the scale.

You can use white vinegar freely. It has a strong scent but it isn't harmful. It's usually sold pre-diluted to 5%. Also, you can change the substrate anytime you're ready. I am not an expert, but maybe I can help with what I do know. 1. The first thing is the reptile bark. I am not sure this would be appropriate substrate is it not just shreaded fir bark.
